Jester and Eightball are the best so far, IMO.
Eightball can also be interpreted as a reference to the radio command “call the ball” that naval aviators (carrier-based ones, anyway) get when approaching the ship. While landing, they are watched by a group of highly experienced personnel aboardship who radio them feedback about how their glide path is looking, and whether they should keep coming or do a go-around. More/less flaps, speed, pitch attitude, etc as well. But as a supplement to this, there is a visual system of Fresnel lights that gives them an optical read on how they are doing, once they’re up close and able to see it. Basically it’s a system with a series of circular lights arranged in a horizontal line, with a single light in the middle that is either in plane with the other lights, or above, or below. Above is overshooting, below is undershooting, and in plane is just right. The center light is referred to as The Ball or The Meatball; “call the ball” means that the Fresnel optical system should be visible from the aircraft’s position, and that the crew should look for it. (There are some other wrinkles, such as other info the OLS can convey, but those are the basics) |

Maybe he chose "Wayne" as his codename because his real name is something silly, like Susan or Turd.

When I did my custom version a few years ago I called him “Lock-On”. I thought it fit well as his role would be the fighter’s Radar Intercept Officer.

Seems like a good question for The Honcho Mark Weber from WOJM podcast.
