One subject I never see get discussed on this forum regarding Zarana is her very unusual name. Zarana is a Serbo-Croatian name, meaning "pre-mature" or "early", and would seem to indicate that she is of Serbian, Croatian, or Bosnian origin.
Was Zarana born pre-mature? If not, why did Hasbro give her a name that means that? Zandar is a name which could come from Pakistan, being an Urdu Indic word related to Hindi but written in the Persian script and having loanwords from Persian or Arabic. I have read various guesses about what the word Zandar might mean but am not certain if they are correct. For example, it might mean "responsible".

I like this. It could be that Zarana & Zandar were born premature as twins often are.

In an effort to clean up all these threads on Zarana & Zandar, I'm replying here to the other threads. Here's a pic of the reply Larry sent me about their being twins from the beginning.

They picked names that started with Z and sounded interesting. What does Zartan mean? If you are going to read that deeply into this, are you going to continue along that path and assert Zarana is of Serbian, Croatian or Bosnian descent but her twin brother is Pakistani? Are they really twins if so? You have to if you are going to argue Zarana?s name reflects her ethnicity and a literal aspect of her birth; the same goes for Zandar.
you are likely reading far too much into what went into naming them. Or do you believe every character?s name reflects some literal aspect of their life? My comments were regarding the unusual names that they picked for the siblings of Zartan. Zarana was possibly chosen because they thought it was a pretty sounding female name. I'm not sure why they chose Zandar, because to me it sounds like the name of an automaton inside a fortune teller machine at an amusement arcade. At the time they created the Zartan figure, they didn't even know that they would be creating names of his family members a couple of years later. Larry Hama enjoyed using anagrams for the G.I. Joe stories, and Zartan is an anagram for Tarzan. As far as I know, Zartan does not actually mean anything. So, to answer your questions, I'm not reading too much into anything, or pondering life aspects of these fictional character names. I'm just having some fun with these names, and this hobby. If you're not, then I suggest you try to find a more suitable hobby.

When Big came out 1988 it did make me wonder why Hasbro didn't just name Crystal Ball, Zoltar. But then also in 1988, Voltar came out. That would be kinda silly to have a figure named Zoltar and then another figure named Voltar. Lol But Voltar does look more like Zoltar now that I'm looking at the pics. |

Kind of how people used to say Darth Vader meant "dark father" in another language, but Lucas didn't intend it that way, it was just a coincidence.
