My great-uncle was in the Navy during WWII and had a tattoo from the days only sailors and criminals had them. I remember him showing me this tattoo on his arm. A really ornate anchor.
This same uncle had a wooden foot and when I was about four, I remember holding it in my hand and tickling it, and he was laughing up a storm!

All my footless acquaintances have aluminum or plastic tootsies, but my dad knew a guy with a fancy hook hand with a custom made base of mahogany and ivory inlay, IIRC. It was something like that. I only vaguely remember the dude from my early years...and I only remember him at all because he scared the shit of me. I think he was responsible for my early fascination with pirates. You know, this is another reason why people dying just sucks. If my pop was still alive, I could ask him about that guy. It's weird all the little bits of knowledge that just disappears when someone dies.

Man, ain't that the truth! I wish I could go back in time 25 yrs ago when I was 18 and ask my great grandma dozens of questions about coming over from Sicily in 1913 and living here and raising a family of 7 in a tiny 2-bedroom house in KC, Missouri. Plus a ton of stuff about the family that nobody is sure of today. Not to mention all the cool stuff she probably saw over the years. Wish my grandfather and dad had both still been around when I was older than 15 too.
I guess this is why people keep daily journals, huh? lol I wish I would have had more respect / interest for her history when I was a kid. I'd love to go back and talk with her. |
