If they lost the pink scarf on that picture that would actually be a cool zandar.

I hope we get a Zandar reveal around the time Zarana is released, and that they're twins is mentioned and not neglected.

Just looked at gijoe.com's character section! They're still neglecting Zandar and his relationship to his twin Zarana. Please fix this, Hasbro.

So got one of the Ballantine Joe books this past weekend and was able to read through it today! Invisibility Island has one reference to Zandar in it...
So confirmation that back then there actually was a reference to them being twins and not just siblings. The book was published in May '88, so probably written in 1987 when both figures were still being sold in stores. Still waiting for other book, Operation: Jungle Doom, to arrive in my mailbox. Anyways, thought DT would like to see this. Also was nice to get some confirmation on this!

I consider it likely that Kathryn Lance (writing under the pen name of Lynn Beach) didn't know very much about these characters when she wrote the Young Adult / Fiction G.I. Joe book titled Invisibility Island published by Ballantine Books in 1988. She probably had no idea that Zarana does not take orders from Zanzibar. She could see on the product box illustration that Zanzibar was a pirate Dreadnok seated on a flying throne, and possibly concluded that he gives orders to the other Dreadnoks.
The back of that book cover states that COBRA agent Zanzibar and his Dreadnok troops have infiltrated the high security think tank and have kidnapped Dr. Ehks. Zarana taking orders from Zanzibar? Wow. I seriously doubt that could ever happen, unless the author was unfamiliar with these characters. This seems out of character for Zanzibar when considering his action figure file card states that Zanzibar is so nasty that the other Dreadnoks hate his guts! He sneaks around at night and goes through their pockets for change. One year early than the Ballantine Books story Invisibility Island, the June 1987 Marvel Comics G.I. JOE # 60 by Larry Hama, had Zarana hopping aboard a barge and beating the thieving pirate, Zanzibar, to teach him a lesson for stealing from Zartan and the Dreadnoks. The Marvel Comics versions of the characters Zanzibar and Zarana had as much in common with the Ballantine Books versions as the Marvel Comics version of Zandar had with the 2013 film version of Zandar played by Matt Gerald in G.I. Joe: Retaliation. On January 18, 2021, HissTank forum member truejoefan directly asked Ron Rudat if Zarana and Zandar were ever intended as twins, and Ron Rudat answered the same as he always previously had. He does not remember them being twins. I think that is because he designed them as siblings. Until recently Larry Hama would never say that they were twins, but after years of direct requests from a single person (several years after memory problems developed that prevented Larry Hama from remembering which characters were dead or alive in his stories), he was kind enough to include a single word in a single narrative sentence of a single IDW comic issue to establish these characters as twins. I am convinced that he was only being very generous when he did that upon request, or else maybe that was his moment of clarity when he finally regarded them as twins for the first time in his writing career.
