To me as a kid, the branch of service of the Joes wasn’t that relevant. Most of OG13 just look like generic Army men. Certain guys like Gung Ho or Torpedo/Wet Suit are intrinsically linked to their branchs by name or MOS. But I looked at Cutter as a hovercraft Pilot first not where he got his training. Although I was aware he was a Coastie because of my dad. Joe actually made lesser known MOS’s known to kids. I don’t think the specific branch of service mattered much to most kids in the 80s. |

Boat captains, rescue pilots, rescue divers and all that surrounds drug boat interdictions seem like they could have place in Joe to me. My father is a retired Coast Guard Officer. 22 years of service. As a kid, he would go away on duty for months in the Gulf and the Atlantic to stop drug runners.
While we may not always need a presence in other countries, we'll always need to protect our borders. |

I’m sure Coasties are happy to hear they do nothing and are boring. I've long said the Coast Guard doesn't get enough credit.
Aw, you were too dumb to bring in your boat with a hurricane coming and got stuck? Guess it's time to fly a helicopter into it and save your sorry ass.

It really is a great movie with a couple original songs about the Coast Guard even in it. The trailers I just looked up online don't do this movie any justice, are crap, and misleading even. Don't watch those. The movie is actually kind of deep at times. There are many great quotes and interesting things talked about that make you stop and think. The opening and ending voice overs are one of those: If you watch the movie also watch the ending credits as they a filled with real photos going back 100 years or more of the Coast Guard with Bryan Adams original song about the Coast Guard playing over it: I knew right off the bat Cutter was in the Coast Guard. I thought there was another 3.75" Joe who was too? I am not sure about in the 60s or 70s but in the 90s they did at least two or three 12" Coast Guard guys. I think one might have been a Maritime Security dude? Last edited by MGurlea; 10-11-2021 at 03:33 AM.. |

The Guardian, starring Kevin Costner, Ashton Kutcher, and a lot of real life Coasties, is the absolute best United States Coast Guard movie. I take movies over to a friend's house and our families all get together and watch them. All kinds of different movies that are new and old. I often bring war movies over as his son is into those. I recently brought over The Guardian and my friend and his son were blown away by it and said it was one of best movies I have ever brought over for them to watch. That is saying something as I have brought over some pretty great films. It really is just a good movie too and a total advertisement for the Coast Guard. It makes you want to go and join after watching it. If you have not seen this movie go watch it.

I have the G.I. JOE DEF serve as the JOEs' version of the USCG and Federal Marshals.
Of course, all JOEs serve by fiat of the POTUS, so they can operate unencumbered by normal restrictions placed on the 4 larger branches of the armed forces. |
