GI Joe Will Probably Never Get The Respect It Deserves. Star Wars Just Had Much Better Marketing. The Brand Needs To Find Another Path. I Think A Darker More Gritty Approach Would Serve It Better. Have Joes Battle The Drug Cartels Or ISIS. I Think Basing It In Today’s Reality Would Improve It.

GI Joe has survived, but only on life support at several stages, many of them within the last 10-15 years. There's a reason it hasn't been a "flagship" brand for Hasbro for quite some time. Even now it's a "developing" brand. Point being, GI Joe hasn't been remotely close to Star Wars in terms of market share for over 30 years. Marvel and Transformers both outstrip it as well in semi-recent history. Quote:

Nevermind that it would provide the ugly look of GI Joe being all about killing brown people from outside the US. Not likely the best hook if you're trying to expand your global market share along the way (or avoid some brutal public relations nightmares). To say nothing of sidelining arguably the most iconic characters of your brand if COBRA is out of the equation. |

That's pretty much apropos of nothing. Star Wars was "dead" during a period of no movies or television media supporting it (and more to the point, at George Lucas' command...Kenner had been ready to continue the line even in the absence of movies), and it became resurgent even before movies started hitting screens again with the Special Editions.

And that it doesn't matter if GI Joe was on top of the world 35 years ago. Hasbro cares about the next quarter-the next five years or so. It is VERY much a case of "what have you done for me lately?" All GI Joe's past success earns it is continuing efforts by Hasbro to revive it. That's not nothing, but it's hardly "soon to be a flagship brand again" territory, either. |

It matters a whole lot. G.I. Joe is a legacy brand. The very name is a part of the American lexicon.

Because "the very name is a part of the American lexicon" sure, but that name ain't enough to get new generations interested all on its own. Last edited by Jmacq1; 10-06-2021 at 05:55 PM.. |

It would be great for Hasbro to restore GI Joe. Not in the weird, faceless ninja way. That's not Joe.
I added my $.02 before some time ago, and feel the same way: GI Joe shaped my life big time. The characters spoke to my curiosity of the military, the file cards got me interested in learning more about my country and other stuff. Funny but true: I lived in a bad spot in town, lots of drug activity, shootings, etc. One night there was a shootout in front of my house, cops all around, etc. Somebody dumped a MAC-11 in our backyard. Guess how I learned the weapon classification: GI JOE. GI Joe shaped my life. I joined the Marine Corps, served 22 years and retired in 2017. My son is interested in it now, so we play around with classic and 25th stuff because those figures actually have interesting backgrounds, not like some forever faceless ninja battle that's pawned off as GI-anything. Like I said, $0.02. Respect, y'all.
