Well, if the Joe follow a similar concept who's what could happen i mean, if Star Wars could work like a Live-Action show so the Joe brand can if done well.

The point is that GI Joe has not been a hugely successful brand for quite a while, and there's no magic button to make it one. It's all a roll of the dice. Whereas Hasbro is more likely to invest further resources in proven properties. And that's not even considering that it's not exactly a 1:1 shift-of-resources if they lost the Star Wars license. Without Star Wars they also lose the money Star Wars was bringing in, so just as likely there's NOTHING at Hasbro that actually benefits from them losing the Star Wars license. A bunch of people would probably get laid off, a select few would transfer to other lines, and everything else continues on. |

The thing is, if Hasbro ever lost the SW license... that would probably mean that they lost the Marvel license at the same time. As well as the Disney Princess license that probably dwarfs all the others.
If anything, Disney probably wants to buy Hasbro outright to just simplify their merchandise distribution. Which would probably well and truly screw over Joe / TF.... |

Demilitarizing the relaunch of a line of military toys hurt the Joes, but who knows what other toylines Hasbro has been able to develop because of the diehards who fork over too much money for retro toys. To me, that's likely one of the few reasons they've held onto a brand They dislike and don't understand.
Star Wars captivated the pack mentality a long time ago and has yet to let go. Even if SW tried to die, Disney would not let it. I cannot remember a successful toy line based on Star Trek. Can you? |

The playmates line wasn't my thing but it ran a long time. Hard to say it was a failure. I don't see it happening again anytime soon given the state of the franchise. |

In this day and age, I think a Playmates line of "collectible figures" would do quite well. I doubt we're talking about the same sort of playmates though.

Also Disney buying one of the world's biggest toy manufacturers would probably tip them over the line into being a full monopoly, and they'd risk getting the corporation broken up by Uncle Sam. Quote:

Also given that it's Hasbro that gets to decide what the brand is, it's kind of hard to say they "don't understand it." They may not have a solid grasp on how to make the current brand appeal to new generations of kids, but that doesn't mean they don't know what the brand is. Or put another way, "We" don't get to decide what the brand is or means for anyone but ourselves. But that sure won't stop the armchair brand managers who seem to think there's a magic button that exists to make any toy line a raging success and yet somehow nobody in the multi-billion dollar toy company has ever thought to press it for GI Joe. |

Vertical integration isn't really a point of concern when it comes to monopoly analysis - and I'd bet that Disney wouldn't mind having the extra $150 million or so annually they'd get from having Hasbro in-house (and possibly even significantly more than that, given that they wouldn't be paying licensing fees to themselves). The Hasbro IPs would be a decent sweetener, but realistically Disney getting full control over its own merch rather than having to farm it out wouldn't be the worst idea.
And Disney, while absurdly successful at the moment, is a LONG way from a monopoly. Not while Netflix exists, at any rate. Now, if they buy THEM.... |
