Yep. And I'd be willing to bet the vast majority of those tweets came from people who don't really like or care about Gi joe. They like and care about the activism.

Still no Zandar on gijoe.com...
:( I'm watching everything I've fought for disappear.

So Zandar's absence isn't necessarily apropos of anything.

Zarana and Zandar debuted together in the cartoon and comics from what I remember. Zarana was used a lil more in the comics cause Baroness left - but these characters arent really A-listers.
Zandar got put in the GI JOE Retaliation movie, but its not like they were faithful or anything but he's there still and played by a competent character actor. I don't think he's a forgotten figure/character. |

Half the Battle: Zarana* https://gijoe.fandom.com/wiki/Zarana https://www.yojoe.com/comics/marvel-comics/ * Interesting to note that from the moment she first appears, her Sunbow screentime blows away all other Dreadnoks (plus any female character not named Lady Jaye).

With the kids aren't into Gi joe thing, is there a property the majority of kids are into? In the 80s, there were maybe 10 properties that kids were into. Gi Joe, Transformers, Heman, Ghostbusters, Thunder cats, Ninja Turtles, Star wars, and so on. None of these completely went away, and more properties were added. DragonBall z and Power Rangers for example. Would any of these properties have a lot of popularity with kids today? Could it be that kids today have so many more options for activities and entertainment with the internet and video gaming that the majority are not really into any brand property specifically? Could we not say kids aren't really into any of these brands anymore? Take as an example Avatar. It was one of the highest grossing movies of all time, but its just another movie to most people. Consume the media then on to the next thing.
But yeah, you're pretty on the mark in general here, I think. Between a wide array of options and there no longer being the "captive audience" effect of Saturday Morning (or even Syndicated Afternoon) cartoons where manufacturers could advertise their product, kids just...aren't into the same kinds of diversions we were when we were kids. Most of them seem to "Graduate" to electronic doodads after a relatively brief period of traditional toys...and "Action figure wise" many of them never get into anything more fancy than Titan Heroes and the like. And that's not an inherently bad thing. I mean, it's not great for those of us that want bigger and better traditional action figure lines, but what "kids these days" are into isn't inherently better or worse...it's just different. |

My experience with my son & his friend is that kids today still dig "traditional" toys, but outgrow them sooner in most cases. They're heavily influenced by peers & what's trending though, so they may continue buying Fortnite toys at an older age, for example, if it's still deemed cool to be into it. Mostly, they just follow trends, which is what we did too. Same as it ever was. That said, some brands sell better than others, which is why shelf space is devoted to Jurassic World (kids still love dinos & I see kids looking at 'em whenever I'm in a toy aisle), but not GI Joe.

Zarana was used a lil more cause she was the only other female Cobra around in the comic. Hama didnt make Baroness on good terms with Cobra Commander in the series plus her and Destro were something of an item.
