The Adventure Team weren't the only ones fighting the good fight against the Red Shadows. The Central Intelligence Agency did their part by sending one of their best agents to infiltrate the Red Shadows and provide intelligence. During Operation Snake Eyes, Cobra faked his death and fled underground. He found the various money and weapons caches he placed all over the world and started a ruthless new terrorist organization. He even recruited former Red Shadows agents such as the Baron's own younger sister, Anastasia, to serve in his new army. To taunt his former CIA handlers, he named this new organization after his old codename--COBRA!

There aren't. The Arashikage *were* rumored to be ninjas back in the Sengoku period, and they still function as spies and assassins for hire, but they're fully modernized and have kept up with the times. Snake Eyes is a private military contractor hired by Hawk for his first-hand knowledge of Cobra's inner workings.

Snake Eyes was kidnapped by the Red Shadows when he was a boy and trained to be a Red Janissary, the forerunners of Cobra's Crimson Guards. He had only one friend during this time, Red Laser's son, Tomisaburo Arashikage. When the Red Shadows fell, the boy who would become Snake Eyes became a roving mercenary with no hope and no future. That is, until he met Cobra Commander. In the boy, Cobra Commander saw the merciless gaze of a serpent and decided to personally take him under his wing under the name Snake Eyes. He became like part of Cobra Commander's family alongside The Baroness and Cobra Commander's biological son, Billy.

But this loving relationship came to a bitter end when Cobra Commander ordered him to assassinate the head of the Arashikage Group. The Arashikage leader, known as the Hard Master, was ironically feared by his brother Kenta to have gone soft and was believed to have been planning to have the Arashikage renounce their infamous history and go legitimate. Kenta Arashikage went to Cobra Commander and arranged to have the Hard Master assassinated. Cobra Commander relished the idea of the future head of the Arashikage owing him a favor and sent his best assassin, Snake Eyes, to make sure the job got done.

Snake Eyes infiltrated the Arashikage as a janitor and bided his time for the right moment. However, during the mission, Snake Eyes discovered that the Hard Master had raised Tomisaburo as his own son after the death of Red Laser in Operation Snake Eyes. Snake Eyes just couldn't betray his only friend and returned to Cobra Commander empty handed. Cobra Commander was furious and had Firefly burn him alive before leaving him for dead. Cobra Commander then decided to just outsource the job to Zartan and be done with it.

Cast out of Cobra, Snake Eyes once again became a wandering mercenary until he was hired by Hawk after he told him how he got his scars. (Well, he didn't literally tell him, Snake Eyes wrote it down.)
