Resolute was great fun for the grownups but it was too mature for the kids. It doesn't solve how to grow the brand for a new generation, which is probably why Hasbro didn't continue with that road.

Maybe, but with things like fortnite getting action figures, and what kids are exposed to online, I'm not so sure. In any case it could easily be toned down for proper season run.

Marvel and DC can have separate child teen and adult focused franchises running at the same time. This is like the prego spaghetti sauce problem. Doing blind customer studies to figure out the best selling spaghetti sauce formula - they realized the customer base was too segmented for a single solution. https://contentmarketinginstitute.co...versification/
The irony is GI Joe historically catered to two demographics. It was the second best selling comic at its height because of adult readership. While the cartoon clearly aimed toward a young audience. Sure it started out as a three pronged approach: comics, toys, and cartoon - but the three diverged early on - and that’s where they had success. They could get that again. Kids cartoon, adult tv series, collectible toys. Maybe get idw to stop shitting all over the comics. |

I don’t think you could do Joe vs Aliens to save the brand. Maybe if it’s against Ripley’s Aliens then you might have something. But I could see in an ongoing cartoon, ala Sunbow, Joe and Cobra teaming up to fight aliens in an episode or two-parter. I liked in the old Sunbow episodes when that happened (tube worms, gamesmaster, etc). You know Joe doesn’t trust them but has to. You know Cobra will break the truce.

Ironically, WAY back in the day (circa 2004), I had heard rumors of Hasbro planning a Lunartix Empire Invasion as a follow up to Robot Rebellion (the 2005-2006 Product Theme).
I’m of the view that NONE of the Joe subteams were innately “bad ideas” (Eco-Force was a bit iffy though). The issue is always execution, and in the mid-90s, GI Joe really suffered from simply “existing”. There was no real focus on any one idea, and as a result, the “identity” of GI Joe was increasingly watered down by endless, often short lived, supplemental themes. Quote:
Said film’s underwhelming performance in turn effected a TON of plans going into 2010 (like the complete overhaul of Pursuit of Cobra, resulting in many projects like Operation HISS not being utilized as intended) To date, Hasbro really hasn’t invested in anything like Resolute because….they really don’t have a pressing reason to do so. They’d be marketing to the same group that’s already buying toys, so there would likely be little to gain. Transformers has gotten its “collector media” because it has a collector line substantial enough to justify it (not that we’ve gotten much GOOD from said media). Quote:
All this debate and fussing and arguing…and sometimes the simplest solutions are best. Hasbro may opt to minimize the overtly military elements of GI Joe (at times, considering Retro Collection continues to sport realistic weaponry), but that doesn’t mean they’ll change the fundamental nature of the most popular iteration of the brand: A team of specialists assembled to fight Cobra, a villainous group striving for global conquest. Military special forces (foreign and domestic), firefighters, police, veterinarians, scientists, computer specialists…anyone can be a GI Joe. They fight a group composed of cyborg mercenaries, ninjas, bikers, radicals, would be dictators and weapon dealers. Remember Transformers: for how much complexity the comics have given the brand (I’d argue that IDW’s Transformers work has added more depth to the franchise than anything of the past decade or two), the recent kids series, Cyberverse, was just Autobots vs Decepticons. Optimus Prime was the hero, Megatron and his goons were the bad guys. The series didn’t go deeper than that because IT DIDN’T NEED TO.

Manimals suffered from poor execution. I would love to see the concept brought back from the labs of Mindbender.
