Did Hasbro design the figure that became 'Snake Eyes' before Hama created the character and back-story?
I imagine that Hama was presented with the toy and had to come up with the rest, but I'd love some info on this. At what point did Hama decide to make SE silent, and when did he come up with the ninja background? Perhaps it came about as he wrote ARAH #10, for the brainwave scanner sequence. My apologies if this has been discussed in another thread. Jason |

From what I recal the charcater that Larry pulled a lot of his ideas from for the og13 for came from an idea he was playing around with which was a small paramilitary group. One of these characters was to be named Spook whom was very much the basis for what he ended up doing with Snake Eyes.

Snake Eyes and Spook from Fury Force by Larry Hama, in JonĂ‚Â*Thurmond's GI Joe Sketches Comic Art Gallery Room
Description If you follow GI Joe A Real American Hero comic lore, you've probably heard about Fury Force, a pitch Larry Hama had for Nick Fury's son to run a special operations team. Spook, who'd been burned and wore bandages, was the pre-cursor to Snake Eyes. Was really excited to have Mr. Hama put these two together for me at VA Comicon 11/2014.

Spook is back right.
Fury Force | Joepedia | Fandom powered by Wikia In an interview at QKTheatre.com, Hama said: There were a lot of holdovers from the ‘Fury Force’ concept that I had been developing for Marvel at the time. The whole idea of a secret base under a motor pool, for instance. I even had a “Snake-Eyes” type character, who didn’t speak, had his face covered with a cowl and was a mysterious assassin type. He carried a pump shotgun and a commando knife in his boot and was actually inspired by the Pahoo-Ka-Ta-Wah (Wolf Who Stands in Water) character in the old ‘Yancy Derringer’ TV show. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yancy_Derringer Yancy's sidekick, Pahoo-Ka-Ta-Wah, is a silent Pawnee American Indian who communicates only by hand gestures. Pa-hoo-Ka-Ta-Wah is Pawnee for "wolf who stands in water" (as mentioned in the first episode). Although Pahoo is short on talk, he is long on action. Beneath a blanket wrapped about his body, he carries a sawed-off double-barreled shotgun loaded with split buckshot, which he wields in emergencies. Most of the time, however, he uses a throwing knife sheathed on his back.

That is some awesome history right there.
One thing I've wondered for a very long time was which Ninja came first? Was Snake Eyes always meant to be revealed as the ninja master, or did the creation of Storm Shadow inspire the change? Was it Hasbro, or Larry who had this idea?

Larry created the link between SE and SS, I've read him saying the tattoo at the end of #21 was something he threw in with no idea where it was going. So I imagine it's all Larry's work.
