Hama for me as well.
But I consider Sunbow to be indispensable too. Hama was deeper, Sunbow was wider, making for a great pairing IMO. Some highlights of each for me: Hama: * Snake Eyes and the history and friendships with Tommy, Stalker, Scarlett, Wade, etc * Arashikage values and Joe values * great missions and locales & lore, such as Destro’s castle in the Trans-Carpathians, Cobra Island, Springfield, the Kwinn-Venom story, Benzheen and Trucial Abysmia, Sierra Gordo, Wolkekukucland, Broca Beach, the various Pits, Magda and the White Clown, the Oktober Guard, Wingfield, etc * use of Hawk as leader * Destro’s honor * Cobra Commander’s various sides (vicious, verbose, Billy…) beyond capering nutbag * great use of memorable “guest star” type characters, some of whom I mentioned above, some others being Candy and Dr Appel, several Arashikage masters, Cool Breeze, Scarface, Sean, Dawn, etc * emphasis on character rather than glory, public appreciation * nice attention to details like where people are in a room, terrain in a firefight, sense of spontaneity Sunbow: * defines personalities of wide range of characters very well * great voice work * special mention to work done for Flint, Lady Jaye, Shipwreck, Beach Head, and (though I’m not as into him) Slaughter, who might never have been iconic without this show * exemplary work on CC, Destro, Baroness, Duke, Scarlett, Roadblock, and Gung Ho as well, at least equal to Hama’s great work on them * really good animation and light effects * some nice bickersonesque writing with CC, Destro, Baroness, Bludd, Mindbender, even Serpentor, often centering on Cobra Commander’s zany side * theme song, movie Cobra song, hell, even the toon credit outro music… * some memorable character moments in 86 especially, Low Light’s nightmares or Mainframe x Zarana * making Zartan and the Dreadnoks cool * impressive innovation in finding Saturday morning toon alternatives to the violence they couldn’t show * gliders * cool interpretation of the Pit neither: * using Firefly well |

I can't decide. As a kid, all I knew was the cartoon and it was plenty. As an adult I discovered the comics and fell in love with the rich story...until it got too ninja-centric and the art took a dive.
I love them both. I thought Resolute was a near-perfect meeting in the middle between them. Near. |

Anyway, my criticism of the waste of Firefly aims more at the eighties. Firefly running around in the late 80s would have been too cool. Maybe someday we’ll get some stories that could be re-imagined as taking place then, or before the Cobra civil war. |

The comic showcased Snake Eyes more, his relationship with Scarlett & Storm Shadow & Stalker.
I feel like the cartoon kept the same handful of characters over and over and didn't mix in the other characters enough. |

What you said about the cartoon. Isn't this what you just insinuated with the comic?

The cartoon was as if the voice actors or animators refused to do other characters so just went with the same Alpine, Bazooka, Lady Jaye, Flint, BBQ, Shipwreck. I can only think of one episode Low Light said anything. I don't recall Torpedo. I do hope a new badass character emerges so it's not just the Snake Eyes & Storm Shadow franchise. |

It’s not so much that Sunbow didn’t give time to new characters in its later years as that the 1985 season has far, far more episodes than 1986, or (of course) the two miniseries’ or the movie.
New stars like Flint, Lady Jaye, and Shipwreck, and new supporting characters like Bazooka & Alpine or the Dreadnoks have disproportionately larger presences because the season their toys were being especially promoted during was the long one. 1986 actually did try to develop characters with character-focus episodes like Low-Light’s nightmares, Mainframe’s star-crossed romance with Zarana, or Lifeline’s family conflict with his pacifist minister father, as well as recurring character detail bits like Wetsuit’s bickering interservice rivalry with Leatherneck or Iceberg being a southerner who loves the cold. Serpentor and Mindbender got quite a bit of time over on the Cobra side, a lot of time that otherwise would have gone to Destro and the Baroness. These things said, though, I think Hama is the gold standard for Joe, and I agree with you that his character work is a strength of his work. |

Great job. Hama is indeed the gold standard for Joe characterization, but glad to see so many fans open to different/updated interpretations as well as the acknowledged reverence Hama had for the animated series while writing his comic. Either way, "both" is the best answer

I love them both. I thought Resolute was a near-perfect meeting in the middle between them. Near. Sometimes I compare the tone of GI Joe to Indiana Jones. Classic world-trotting pulp adventure heroics.
