I love both. And I love both for different reasons. I think both the comic book and the cartoon are great to this day.
I may not really dig some things in one or the other, like the Duke and Scarlett relationship in the cartoon, or Breaker and Doc's death in the comic book, but I really like some others, especially Spirit versus Storm Shadow in the cartoon and most of the Original 13 stories in the comic book. |

I dig the cartoon, but I rarely saw it as a kid. The comic was the mythos for me.

Absolutely the comic. I am a huge Snake Eyes fan and he was downplayed in the cartoon. I don’t think there is any cartoon episode that comes close to comic issue 21, Silent Interlude. Cobra La and Sgt Slaughter becoming the be all and end all of the later Sunbow episodes also bothered me. Lastly, the cartoon had almost the worst version of Cobra Commander (ROC being the worst), though admittedly the comic version wasn’t great. The Resolute cartoon and DDP comic series had the best ones.

Comic. We didn’t get the cartoon until later and then mainly in video in the uk and by then I was fully into the comic lore.
I remember just being disappointed that it looked great but the stories never grabbed me.

Sunbow. The comic becomes nothing more than a book about various ninjas and ninja related characters who all have intertwined backgrounds about 40 or 50 issues in, and doesn't get good until you're on around issue 15. Even Cobra Commander's son is a ninja, and Baroness's backstory is tied to Snake Eyes, and everyone is tied to Snake Eyes, and Snake Eyes is some how the most important starring character who overshadows all the other characters despite being the most uninteresting.

Born in 86, I loved it ALL. From the cartoons, to the comics, the little to big Joes, even Sgt. Savage, GI JOE Extreme and Action Man - I was obsessed with Joe as a kid. Towards the end of my toy days I stripped that down to Classic Collection and then Ultimate Soldier, and then a long hiatus during my teens and 20s, but now I’m at that ripe nostalgia age where I’m into all that “simpler” stuff from being a kid.

Comics, however certain aspects (mostly characters) from the toons woulda been nice to have crossed over. Like how DC pulled Harley from B:TAS into the comics.
