I love the set up in the last episode. Literally all of Cobra is fed up with Serpentor and ready to rebel under the Commander, and we seem to be set for a Cobra Civil War, with Cobra against Serpentor, Mindbender and maybe the BATS. A follow up miniseries could have been a lot of fun.
Instead we got the Movie and everyone's mad at CC again. Last edited by AWOL; 07-26-2021 at 04:43 PM.. Reason: Chuck to Buzz LOL |

I think Buzz says he came up with the idea of Serpentor as a DNA clone of historical soldiers, as well as Cobra-La. So I assume in those cases Larry Hama was actually told to write his file cards based on a plot he had nothing to do with.

Technically Cobra Commander could've likely been playing the part of the lackey and scapegoat in cartoon movie since that is part of Cobra Commander's plan and agreement with Serpentor - after hes saved Serpentor's life with the flamethrower. Cobra Commander also formed COIL to topple Serpentor, but instead we got the movie which really went into a Inhumanoids direction, although the cartoon frequently used Lovecraft-like monsters since the very beginning. Destro even being a cult leader with his castle in Scotland serving up sacrifices. There was also lots of weird stuff happening in the cartoon.
Cobra Commander would have his revenge in the DIC toon, but really Resolute followed up on playing the part of fool as part of his facade and deceptive ways and it properly merged the original toon and original comic. |

If I recall correctly, CC said he played the fool to 'motivate' his troops...which makes no sense. |

Motivate them to work harder because they assumed he was going to screw everything up and would need them to fix it? LOL

Both are a little campy for my tastes (at least for the story of an international terrorist organization fighting a clandestine spec ops team), but I like the comic a little more for being willing to show a death once in a while and developing a lot of the Cobra characters (who I find more interesting than the Joes) and having lots of named background extras. It's main flaws were characters getting cycled out too fast (or barely showing up at all, like Scrap Iron not making it in until 1986) or some characters being done dirty like Firefly; also, the dialogue is trash a lot of the time (Airborne please just call him Spirit, he knows his last name).
The cartoon has some memorable things, like I like Cold Slither aside from the mind control aspect, and even if I don't care for some of them the personalities and especially voicework is very memorable (CC with Latta's voice and the comic persona is gold). It's just a lot goofier than I like when it comes to Joe. But then, no official media has really captured the vibe I'd like it to have, so eh. As far as the Sunbow cartoons go tho, I like Transformers and Jem a bit more because their material kinda invites the zany plots that those shows had more than Joe, to me. |

In the original script for GIJoe the Movie, Serpentor is killed in the final battle. Golobulus laughs about cloning him again. Then Cobra La was all killed, clearing everyone from the chess board.
That creates the leadership vacuum that leads the Twins to looking to more crime for profit type deals in season three until Cobra Commander is brought back... by Baroness or Crystal Ball I assume or them as a team. DIC was very much a poor substitute for Sunbow and did not have the credibility, say, Transformers season 3 had as a brand continuation. Dragonfire energy really doesn't capture the imagination of children the way Transformer space adventures did. Optimus Prime's return, Unicron's head, etc. Nothing DIC did really had a big impact of GIJoe lore. I guess Metal Head's personality? An example, Scoop as a Cobra agent, a lesser stand in for the tension Mercer creates. Even Mercer's own teammates didn't trust him. |
