Loved both, but the comic was just awesome, and it seemed like a week after the comic introduced a new character, boom, they were on the pegs at the store. I remember reading #11 with Snow Job, Gung Ho and the other new characters, and then went into town and to my local Gibson's and there was the Polar Battle bear and the whole wave of figures. It was good being an only child back then.

As a kid, it seemed like it. I was 12 and since all you had were commercials and the flyers inside the toys to tell you what was coming out, it seemed like everytime someone or something new got introduced in the comic it was on the shelf. I remember the APC right after Destro was introduced. The problem with the cartoon is that it had so many cool things we all wanted that were never made until the 25th line. Baroness in a dive suit, etc. And hell, we still don't have the giant SNAKE ROBOT or the big ass gladiator guy that Danger-Prone Duke had to fight...The cartoon was just a big tease..LOL

Its the cartoon for me, but I do get the comic loyalists. I do kind of like certain aspects to mesh together.
But as why I voted for the toon, it had amazing voice acting, the character quirks all made sense and drove home that connection to make a child want their figure, just enough different set pieces, locales, and always a bit of Indy/Bond vibe going, but also we gotta stop the plot Cobra has. Obviously, there is a big cliffhanger and out followup ended up being DIC, but its definitely a big what if in Joe Media, Sunbow season 3. |

Third, I think the cartoon actually did a better job with the characters. Outside of the Snakes/Storm Shadow/Scarlett/Stalker stories, there's not a lot of characterization in the comics. In the cartoon, there's relationships, friendships, hatred, rivalries, arguments and character development all over the place.
However I will say, that some of my favorite characters, like Lady Jaye and Shipwreck, got their absolute definitive versions in the Sunbow cartoon. Those voice actors brought so much life to those characters. Also, I much preferred Sunbow's use of Tomax and Xamot, in their banker/financier roles. Was Extensive Enterprises even a thing in the comic? This seems odd to me, it seems like something Larry Hama would have definitely included.

Also remember though, in the comics the Cobras had a lot of good relationships and rivalries too.

You really need both. The cartoon was very poor at using Snake-Eyes, and made the terrible decision to make a rivalry between Spirit and Storm Shadow instead. SE also lost Scarlett to Duke. But they developed so many more characters than the comic book did, Serpentor, Slaughter, Duke, Shipwreck, etc. At least until the cartoon ended, and the comic was where you had to go for 1987 guys and up. And Cobra Commander became a true original in the cartoon, with lots of hilarious characterizations from the sly and subtle to the outrageous and campy.
Why I give the edge to the cartoon for the poll is that it was an absolute leader in its medium for the time. There were a lot of great '80s comics that could compete with Joe. All the main superheroes we know today were at peak quality levels at that time in the comics. But G.I. Joe was easily one of if not the very best action cartoons on the air in the '80s. It left so many other competitors like He-Man in the dust. And it was ambitious as hell, in fact, it's said to have the most amount of recurring characters of any TV show ever (live or animated), until The Simpsons topped it. So, the cartoon made you feel G.I. Joe was an A-list property. While, if you went in the comic store, G.I. Joe was holding its own against the competition but wasn't the clear leader of the pack. |
