July 23rd, 2021. How will this date be viewed in the history of GIJoe?
On the one hand, Classified Series is firing on all cylinders and we are all thrilled with it (for the most part). On the other hand, The Snake Eyes movie is getting universally panned and is looking to be a huge flop - both creatively and for the brand. We've been thru it all before. We have had Rise Of Cobra. We had Issue 155. We had the re-launch RAH with the Devil's Due Series. We had the 25th anniversary and we had 1994. What do you consider some milestones for the brand? Both Highs and Lows? When did GIJoe peak? Will we ever have a chance to rise to those levels again? |

Just got back from Snake Eyes and it was a helluva lot better than the two other live-action movies.
I'd say Joe's peak was around 1987 or so. Those of us that were in 2nd or 3rd grade when it hit in 1982 were getting to junior high age, and had to give up our Night Ravens for football games and parties, or so they told us. Still some really great figures after that, but the vehicles weren't nearly as good, and as good as the animated movie's intro was, Cobra-La was the shark-jump. Personally, I prefer now to 2009, but then again, I wasn't really collecting back then (got back into the game in 2012 when I was told to expect a son soon lol). POC definitely had some cool figures and I'd prefer that to just Classified, but I'll take the Retro line over the 25th. |

We might be the most loyal fan base out there. We have been through a lot, but we are still going strong. Lets hope we will get a pay off one day with the movie we have all been dreaming for. The real reboot.

The last high time I really remember before now was summer/fall 2011. POC was transitioning into 30th Anniversary, we saw the reveals at SDCC or JoeCon, and the next movie was on the horizon. I remember it being a very upbeat, energetic, optimistic time on these boards. I remember arguing with CrimsonGuard101 a lot. Good times.
Then, 2012 hit, the Retaliation toy reveals at Toy Fair were met with a lukewarm response, then the Retaliation Delay in May, and well, things seemed in a downtrend after that. .

My personal high: When Larry Hama, the Godfather of GI Joe, confirmed Zartan's two younger siblings, Zarana & Zandar, were twins. This after over a decade of working at it! (It means a LOT to me. I don't have anything resembling a normal life, having severe disabiliies, and this was a high point in my life.)
My personal low: Five minutes later, when Hasbro pulled the rug out from under it.

The debut of the 25th Anniversary 5-pack, and the rest of the 25th line was the modern peak. Everything seemed possible for the brand and the releases started coming fast and furious. The goal was to make figures that looked exactly like the 1980s designs, including direct homages to cartoon versions and foreign figures, etc. Then it all came crashing down with Rise of Cobra with Hasbro's acquiescence to Hollywood's idiotic misunderstanding of the brand. Never again were we seeing releases coming out that fast that were all intent on faithfully and accurately redoing the 1980s designs.

Personal modern high for me: 2008 - finding the BBQ, Hawk, Bazooka, Snow Serpent wave. 25th anniversary was just kicking into high gear. We were on a road trip from Ohio to Chicago. Our son was about 18 months old. We stopped for the night at some podunk little town along the road - it had a Walmart behind the hotel. I can still remember walking over there - finding the whole wave. Buying little toddler shoes for the kid. Snacks. Then we opened the whole wave on the hotel bed and me and the kid played with them together. Great memory.
Personal Low? Perhaps the sadness of reading issue 155. I vividly remember sitting in my truck at Art School, reading it between classes. It was senior year of college - I had just gotten married - GIJoe was ending. Life was changing. Strange how such a small moment can leave such a big impact. |

The low was Eco-Warriors. Suddenly this amazingly good-looking toy line with so many interesting designs and characters looked like a cheap, ugly, gimmicky toy.
