I think the launch of the 1986 range with the Serpentor mini-series was a high point. Sunbow really created an epic plotline there that had such a huge range of characters. It was so much more epic and serious than the mini-series the last year, with the corny Fatal Fluffies and cross-dressing Snake-Eyes. And, amazingly, most of the new characters had just as interesting personalities as the old ones. It's so hard to introduce a new character that measures up to a fan's old favorites but they miraculously did it. The toy design was still excellent, and you had the amazing introduction of the Terror Drome. The new characters just kept coming like Beach Head, Low-Light, B.A.T., Viper, Lifeline, Wet Suit. There was no reason to think the toy line hadn't peaked the year before, but they put together an absolutely stunning new year in 1986. So it felt like the toy line could go on forever at that point. The loss of the cartoon the next year really hurt things, as the characters just couldn't get fleshed out with personalities the same way.

My personal high: When Larry Hama, the Godfather of GI Joe, confirmed Zartan's two younger siblings, Zarana & Zandar, were twins. This after over a decade of working at it! (It means a LOT to me. I don't have anything resembling a normal life, having severe disabiliies, and this was a high point in my life.)
My personal low: Five minutes later, when Hasbro pulled the rug out from under it. He did that for YOU. You made it happen. You made your DREAM happen. The Dreadnok Twins aren't just "head canon" anymore...they're CANON canon. I honestly hope you were absolutely ecstatic seeing that and went and got five copies of the issue to save forever. That's a hell of a triumph for your personal mission. So let me ask you...after that victory, how in the world did Hasbro "pull the rug out five minutes later??" |

I can't imagine how elated you must have been to see that, especially after you'd "given up" on getting through to Larry. But just think about it: you reached him on a personal level and he made a very deliberate decision to send YOU a direct message, right in the pages of LARRY HAMA'S GI JOE....what most of us consider the only true "official" canon of GI Joe. Larry took that extra time and effort to make sure that he stated for a FACT, in print, that Zandar and Zarana are TWINS.

I think the clear decline of GIJoe was after Sunbow GIJoe ended, DIC Joe was clearly a cheap replacement, the toyline's quality declined, the comic had peaked with Cobra Civil War. All the content and product declined around the same time.
Right now GIJoe is Classified and little else. My Joe peak will always be 85-86 toys. That for me is the moment for GIJoe as making its mark on pop culture. We got a movie that's DOA and we had a bad budget video game. Future - Lady Jaye show (will it ever happen anyway?) and some kind of cartoon. Comics keep going on, but they only matter to a niche group. Perhaps what happened with this Snake Eyes movie will get them to cast someone who can give us a Lady Jaye that looks like Lady Jaye. We shall see. Again, if that project even really happens. |

They alienated a lot of their fanbase, completely destroying what makes Snake Eyes so cool, the mystery of the character, also not bringing out a 1:18th scale line, alienating all the loyal Joe fans that have been collecting GI Joe for decades and as well as screening it only at cinemas instead of making money off of streaming too (the future)…. geez, I wonder why its not doing well?!?
Personally I hoped it would be a hit, wanted it to be so bad, but knew it wasn’t going to be in my heart of hearts, hope this doesn’t kill off any future live-action projects planned or even the franchise before its begun with this SE movie? |

It's the highest honor, and I lingered over it for days (still do). It still brings a smile to my face and always will! Unfortunately, I have a digital copy, otherwise I'd have purchased TEN copies!
It's a new era of GI Joe and Classified is selling like crazy. We have Zartan, a Zarana is in production...but there won't be a Zandar. Because Zandar isn't popular enough to bother with. So in one motion, Hasbro snatched my dream away, 10+ years of trying and finally succeeding. Now this. Hasbro can't do anything. They can never take that away. Even me, I never considered them twins at all in my head. But Larry says they are, well....they ARE! But we've talked a lot about how "low-level" Zandar is as a figure. He was always unlikely to ever get a 6 inch update, unless he's something like 90% a Zartan repaint. Besides, if they make him for Classified, there's no guarantee he'll even have any pink on him or even resemble the character from the 80s at all! I think you should just be very happy that you got what you've been pursuing all these years, and look at the figures you DO have and realize they've officially been deemed "TWINS" by the REAL authority. As for Classified, maybe a talented customizer can take an extra Zartan and some other parts and help you out. That way, he'd look the way you want him, with a pink scarf any everything. Focus on your massive victory....that's the important thing. The Classified line isn't even really "A Real American Hero" anyway...it's some weird new thing that's separate. If I weren't in Japan I'd go to a comic store and buy you a few copies and send them to you....you really should have your VICTORY issue in print for your collection! |

Until the 6” line, the new arrivals never reached the same numbers as those lost. 6” is the first time I’ve seen the collector base GROW with a new push in almost 20 years. I’ve seen this same entitlement mentality in Star Wars, and those toys are doing fine (especially now that Disney has produced some compelling media to sell those toys) without a major 3.75” presence.

Classified is selling like hot cakes but I wonder how Hasbro will reevaluate things if the movie tanks.
