DarkOne makes some good points, though. Hama has been stuck in Ninja Force since the mid '90s. Meanwhile, we still don't know why 85-90% of the Joe team was considered the best in their field and were invited into the elite team.


I'd love to go back and learn why each member of the original team was recruited. Then add to the team as missions require a specialist. Give the characters a purpose (in the narrative and as an action figure). Some of these guys only exist because they're a cool concept.


For fun, watch Patriot Games and pretend Harrison Ford is Hawk, Samuel L Jackson is Stalker, James Earl Jones is Flagg. The bad guys are the first COBRA team before they really organized. Doc is taking care of Hawk's wife and kid. Scarlett is an in-house intelligence officer. G.I. Joe #0. The concepts are out there.

G.I. JOE is a dying brand because Hasbro allows Paramount and di Bonaventura to attach the brand to garbage live action media. Then there's the issue of Hasbro constantly trying to A.R.A.H. characters in continuities that don't have tone of the Hama or Sunbowverses.

I watch A LOT of action figure reviews and good portion of these content creators are foreigners. If you're in the school of thought that JOE is a adult collector's line, then there's no problem with the JOEs being American team because adult collectors are buying the Classified line.

it's also "portrayed" and yeah, i hate the uber patriotism. when i was a kid it was the last thing on our minds when we were playing.

i used to watch rescue heroes like it was a new gijoe type show. lots of great shows have been like that. they were firemen, police, doctors, etc. not "super elite mute ninja that does everything that you dont need anyone else."

This touches on the problem with the brand. I'd say it's not that Hasbro allows the brand to be attached to their films. They see the popularity of live-action comic book movies and how they elevated those brands. Hasbro wants a slice of that pie. The problem is that Lorenzo di Bonaventura sucks at picking directors, this guy gave Michael Bay five Transformers movies and picked directors who don't care about the G.I. Joe source material and lore to direct G.I. Joe movies. He chose Robert Schwentke to direct Snake Eyes because Schwentke directed Red ignoring the fact that Schwentke also directed RIPD and Divergent. Travis Knight seems to be the exception to di Bonaventura's director selection process. What Hasbro needs is someone like Kevin Fiege who cares about the source material and fish out directors who also do.

Can you clarify what you mean by this? Are you saying that inserting characters like Duke, Snake Eyes, Scarlett, and Roadblock into continuities that aren't like the Marvel comics or the Marvel/Sunbow cartoon is problematic? Or are you saying that giving these characters their ARAH personalities in non-ARAH continuities is harmful to the brand?

I wish I had saved the link but there was an article from 2017 about why GI Joe cant attract younger fans.

I agree with the bad movies but it was interesting how supposedly the first Joe movie did well in the opening weekend with the under 25 demographic.

The odd thing was the major overseas markets that supported the movies Australia, UK, Russia and China. The article didn't cite their sources but I find it odd to mention that China and Russia are supposedly fans of such an American themed line.

For the most part it seemed that Call to Duty (which is getting all the positive attention) and the War on Terror (reminder that war isn't fun) has detracted from the Joe brand.

Yet, other than those people who deployed or knew those that deployed the American public wasn't put on wartime footing. Other than the Patriot Act and the very visible TSA, the general public was told to go on about their lives so I don't see how the War on Terror really had a negative impact other than conjecture.

I do wish the Classified action figures were not as popular as they seem to be. Even with the recent price increases they fly off the shelf, even Cobra Commander and the Movie Figures are gone.

Hasbro needs to make a digital version of that addictive magic they mix with the plastic to include with the movies.

ROC may have performed well at the UK box office, but the toys sold so badly Hasbro stopped selling Joe toys over here. Outside of specialists like Forbidden Planet, we didn't get anything from POC, Retaliation or Renegades.

this is true. his joe series now, last i heard was there was a new snake eyes and it was ninja stuff going on. so i stopped checking in on that crap. im surprised tjbang or nunchuck havent farted into the scene and im not surprised if kamakura is still doing whatever it was that he did.

when the comics in the 90's went "gijoe ninja force" that's about when i sincerely stopped caring for gijoe story wise; because it was ninja time on the cartoon too.

and i'll never get it. people give cobra la such grief for just existing, and yet, ninjas have been taking over the whole thing since snake eyes showed his ninja tattoo.
