Python Patrol remains among my favorite COBRA subteams!
Following on the success of Tiger Force the previous year, Hasbro released the eighth wave of ARAH with the introduction of Python Patrol and Slaughter's Marauders in 1989. The vehicle boxes began with the exclamation "Cobra's answer to Tiger Force!", and it was a clever storyline to make the argument why some of the same toy molds should be sold again. If the G.I. Joe team could attack COBRA using captured/repainted vehicles of theirs via the Tiger Force unit, then it was fair game for those snakes to use a Conquest jet against the Joes, and to evolve into an even deadlier opponent, the Python Patrol. Python Patrol uses a sophisticated camouflage to give stealth-like capabilities via the Pythonizing Process (in which personnel and/or vehicles are outfitted with a primary layer of radar-resistant black-ball paint, then blanketed with a thermal-wave dispersal grid). I thought this was an excellent play idea for children, and was featured on television with an animated five-part mini-series, "Operation: Dragonfire". I'm a little surprised that Hasbro only marketed this team for a single year or two on store shelves. Fans like myself had to wait another fourteen years until the return of the Python Patrol, via a Toys 'R Us exclusive six figure Python Patrol set in 2003.

beginning in 1960, when the usaf 79th "tigers" tactical fighter squadron was at raf woodbridge, the us together with the uk were having annual meets for a couple of years, until nato became involved and took over the events, forming the nato tiger association, and the decorative paint job which we admire on our g.i. Joe tiger force vehicles.
The only tiger meet location i've ever worked at was ørland main air station in norway, but that was when i was first introduced to the nato tiger association at the turn of the century, and finally understood what the g.i. Joe tiger force paint job was about. While living in the nato community for a number of years a decade ago, i noticed that the nato tiger meets were taking place all over the european mainland, and the paint jobs continued to become more colorful than ever before. Some were so much so that the g.i. Joe tiger force action figure colorful uniforms (vintage or new era) no longer bothered me in the slightest. G.i. Joe collectors have managed to label tiger force as a subteam, much like we do with wolf squad, eco-warriors, sky patrol, or steel brigade (just to name a few), but they are really just the main g.i. Joe force in a "friendly forces" nato paint job. the cobra legions never had a "bad guy" association to join, or a color palette to emulate, other than the cobra blue or crimson color motif. if g.i. Joe were to use captured cobra vehicles against them, they would have to repaint them in such a way that all nato forces would not mistake them for the enemy, and that is the purpose of the tiger force color scheme. There is nothing strategic about the tiger force paint job as a camouflage, to make them blend in with their surroundings, but instead it tells nato forces that the g.i. Joe team is not to be mistaken for international terrorists, or accused of war crimes by operating such weapons in the pretense that cobra forces are responsible for the damage. In keeping with the spirit of the usaf 79th "tigers" tactical fighter squadron colors and comradery which created the tiger meets, the g.i. Joe team wears striped uniform colors which do not camouflage them, but instead clearly identify them to nato as the "friendly" forces operating captured/repainted cobra command vehicles. No, there is not, nor would there be any need for one. When fighting the main forces of cobra command, the g.i. Joe team, operating captured/repainted cobra vehicles, while using internationally recognized nato colors, is still just the main force of the g.i. Joe team, but we as collectors have taken to calling them the tiger force (because it's fun to do so, as kids or as adults).

I hated Python Patrol having Conquests. I thought it was stupid; the Joes would never let Cobra get their grubby mitts on their top-of-the-line advanced fighter jet.
(I didn't read the comic story until years after I saw the toys on Yo Joe! We didn't get Python Patrol in the UK) |

Compared to the Tiger Force, I like the Python Patrol's look more.

Before I could even give it a try, I realized that I don't know what has or has not already been covered in this thread. In my opinion, what the first post of this thread needs is a periodically updated reference list, so that we can see what has already been discussed, but even more importantly, any forum visitor new to this thread can find a favorite topic if they want to know more about anything in particular which was previously discussed.
