My experience was a little different. I recall being introduced to them through the son of one of my mom's work friends. She dropped me off for a bit and this kid was playing with some new toys called GI Joe that were a little fancier than the Star Wars figures I had. I think this was in '83 since I got a Scarlett not long after, followed by HISS Tank for Christmas and eventually a Mail in Duke and a Mail in hooded Cobra Commander the next year. Once 1984 rolled around, I was into it full steam.
The downside of being a late starter was that I missed out on the generic Cobra troopers and officers just as the cartoon was coming out and showing them as the primary generic villains. It wasn't until 1985 at issue 40 that I started picking up the comic, wanting something a little meatier than the Sunbow cartoon. |

I got very lucky. I was born into them. My brother is six years older than me. (1979) and my dad was a big fan of the old joes back in the day. So, he bought my brother pretty much every Joe ever made. So, when I was born the first toys I played with were G.I. Joe. My first words were literally G.I. Joe. That isnt even hyperbole. My first words really were "G.I. Joooo" (No e lol) Just started collecting again when covid hit because I used to run marathons (expensive hobby) and they all got cancelled so I had a mid-life crisis and channeled my marathon money into joes (as well as possibly half my savings). Possibly. I'm dyslexic so never really got into comics of any kind. Should start reading them now. Hard to get in Japan. I watched the cartoon. Just saw the movie for the first time yesterday =P Anywho, nice to meet you all. I have no one to talk about joes with so its nice to be here. |

Definitely felt elements of Carpenter's version, but ISZ's Jim Brown would've made an excellent Stalker.

However, I did more recently when I decided to get heavily into collecting classic RAH. Back in summer 2018 (I think?), I started collecting again since I lost almost all of my childhood Joes between garage sales and Goodwill (not to mention a phase in the late 80s when I thought it was fun to disassemble all of my existing Joes and make new custom characters). I'm finally up to 8 of the 1983 Cobra troopers now, and at an average price of $50 a pop on eBay...I think I'll stick with 8 With regards to the comic, I love it. #20-80 or so are my favorite stories, and I'm still reading and enjoying Hama's current work with it. |

Ha! Well, as a kid, no. My options back then were mostly limited to flea markets and garage sales. I don't recall ever finding any regular Cobra troopers for sale, ever. Plus, troop-building was kind of a foreign concept to me as a kid (I had one stormtrooper and didn't understand needing to own more than one, for example).

In a way, the fans are as much a legacy of LH as they are of the Joes. I don't like all of his choices, but to say he hasn't had a positive influence on my life would be dishonest. Glad you're enjoying his and the creatives' work! |

Saw the figures at a Zayre's in 1982. Parents let me get two figures and two vehicles, at the time, so I got Rock N Roll, Cobra Soldier, FLAK, and RAM. Bought the rest throughout the rest of the year and kept collecting until 1991.

I saw Joes for the first time on a wire spinner rack at an Eckerd pharmacy, probably in late '82; but maybe in early '83. The card art caught my eye, but the elbow and knee joints blew my mind. Even at six years old I was frustrated with the stiff Star Wars figures.
I can't remember for sure, but I think my mom let me get Short-Fuze, Zap, and Stalker. I know Short-Fuze was one of those first purchases because my dad corrected me when I called him "Short-Fuzz". |

Free-standing display in the grocery store, didn't know what the toys were but I was super into Voltar because of the vulture.
