It was during a Christmas party at my elementary school. You know, one of those white elephant gift things? Anyway, I was trying to guess what it was through the wrapping paper and got so excited because I thought it was a harmonica but it just turned out to be Breaker.

Either way, it became the only toy line I was into (until MASK came along). Which kinda sucks when it comes to birthday parties and all of your friends are only into Star Wars and He-Man. I have many birthday pictures where I'm faking a smile as I open yet another Cobra Commander.

First saw them in 82 at K Mart, 3D and TG&Y. They all had those middle of the aisle buckets full of them. My mom said no to Joes but she bought me the Tron figures for doing well in swimming lessons. I still remember seeing Scarlett and Snake Eyes and my mom said I couldn’t get a girl figure. The next Christmas from my uncle I got Flash, Rock-N-Roll, Cobra Trooper, Stalker, the FANG and the APC. My mom was pissed but what could she do? Hooked ever since.

Got televiper and falcon as presents and started watching the show. This was around '86. Then got shipwreck as well. Those got destroyed by the dog. My neighbor got some as well so we started playing with them in the yard, his sand box making forts, all sorts of stuff. The collection kind of went from there. At one point a neighbor down the street has his cousin over. The neighbor and I traded our trading cards quite a bit so one day the cousin had a box of joes he was trading so I traded some cards for those. Got Snake Eyes and some others. Traded my friend a Ninja Viper for a '88 Storm Shadow (wtf was I thinking :-)) cause Storm Shadow was my favorite character. Good times.

Picked up #2 off the spinner rack at our local newsstand. Read it til the cover fell off. Just recently replaced it with a good condition copy all these years later. That issue will always be my favorite. Definitely what I think of when I think of Joe.

It's a classic issue. I'm not sure how far in advance the issue was made, but John Carpenter's The Thing was released 25 June 1982, and this was August of '82. I like to think LH had watched the movie.

I first saw them in the hands of friends/neighborhood kids. A weird Jehovah Witness kid who always wore socks with plastic sandals had a ton of the '82 toys, but wouldn't let any of the rest of us touch them. He didn't get Christmas or Easter presents, so his parents spoiled him the rest of the year. I remember thinking they were some sort of Star Wars guys at first, but this kid kept talking about how they had more "movement" than Star Wars guys. Then another kid down the street had the HISS and I was blown away by how cool and lame it was simultaneously. Going off that one toy, I decided Star Wars had the better vehicles. Later, a friend got some of the figures and really let me play with them. I still remember him pulling open his nightstand drawer to reveal a row of 5 or 6 Joe guys. Funny thing is, I can't remember which figures he had besides that some were '82-'83 Joes and some were Cobras. He might have had Destro. At some point I borrowed a Polar Battle Bear from a friend for a day or two, and then I got my own first Joe for my birthday: the MMS with Hawk. I have a soft spot for Hawk to this day as a result.

You have a good memory! The Polar Battle Bear was a great vehicle. I'm not sure if I had the MMS/Hawk, but I still prefer that version of the character.

So it’s likely they influenced LH, imo.
