I am a bit late to this chat but to my mind most of the movies and cartoons have been rubbish. I would love a whole series of films if they are done correctly by someone who at least had some knowledge of the line and did not target it at young kids or baffoons.
The resolute cartoon was very good. That director/producer is onto something. The others just leave me so disappointed. I would love some good quality well budgeted movies. |

I would prefer a new major release movie first (set in the 1980s), because I feel it would create a mainstream buzz to reinvigorate the brand, and then I would want a series to go deeper to sustain interest.

This is a tough question to answer, because for a movie to even exist, it would have to sacrifice any and all integrity to be accessible to the lowest common denominator..average movie-goers, and don't forget the overseas market. While the last couple of movies are remotely tolerable to users of this site, they are far from ideal depictions of what we'd like to see. I speak for myself mainly, but I know there are others with similar sentiments.
Truthfully, the future of GI Joe is probably more suited as an animation. Resolute was probably the closest thing to a success out of all the attempts made thus far. It strikes a good balance of sophistication/grittiness for older fans but can still be enjoyed by younger ones, too. If they did an animation, I would hope for it to be episodic and seasonal. GI Joe really needs some kind of strong update or refresh to bridge the brand so it has a cohesive voice and direction. An "adult" cartoon on Netflix or Amazon would be awesome. A live action mini series or TV show like the Lady Jaye thing in production could be good, but to make it really shine it would need the budget and attention to detail to make fans happy. As long as they avoid the horrible costume/camo designs of Rise of Cobra. Baby blue camouflage with "GI JOE" woven into the pattern? Horrible idea. The interpretation of Snake Eyes' outfit in the latest movie was a vast improvement over what we saw the character wear in the prior movies. It felt modern and realistic, something in line with a video game kinda, but practical. I feel like this approach would be the way to go. You can spend a lot more time developing plots and characters by going episodic, too. |

I think they should give it an 80s vibe and flavor, but still set it in the near future, like 2030 or whatever. Neo-Retro-80s.

That could be cool… though one of the things I like about gijoe is all the vintage style tech, and I feel military style movies tend to work well from that era…
