Definitely Commando. I don't mind that he's also a ninja, or that he comes with a sword, but I prefer his focus to be Commando, which is why I bought the deluxe Classified version of him (w/Timber)... no sword.

...the whole ninja storyline. It is just very 80's, and seems dated and a little bit silly today. The idea that a highly specialized organization like GI Joe would recruit someone with so much drama in his back story seems unlikely. And if they somehow didn't know about that part of his past, then that says more about the ineptitude of the Joe team's investigating skills. His whole ninja storyline is a huge liability for the Joe team that would be unnecessary for the opportunity to recruit one highly specialized soldier on a team full of specialized soldiers.
I would love to see the story of GI Joe told from the start without Snake Eyes, or at a minimum without him being ninja affiliated. The strong, silent commando could become just as popular without crazy ninja stories. |

Thanks.
I wonder how much the overall story would change without Snakes ever being a ninja? I would still keep Stormy a ninja, and still have them having a back story together. I think it would make their dynamic even more powerful if you had the westerner as the highly trained commando, going against the classically trained ninja. After all, a highly trained commando is still going to be well trained in hand to hand, bladed weapons, and various other weapon skills. Commandos will also be stealthy by the nature of their training. Commando is the military equivalent of a ninja, just not turned up to 11. I really feel this would help to make Snake Eyes more of a foil to Storm Shadow than a copy/paste. The ninja fits Cobra's over the top character type. Not so much with a highly trained, special mission force. I must have missed the ninja option when talking to my recruiter so many years ago. |

I maintain my position that Scarlett should have been the "team ninja". I mean, she has shuriken, comes from a martial arts family / tradition, and is trained with the ka-bar and the garotte. The fucking garotte. No one else in Joe lore was specifically trained in using a garotte for counter-intelligence lol...

Whatever I said previously in the thread, this is my current answer:
This is like asking, "Do you like your chocolate covered pretzels better when they are chocolate, or when they are a pretzel?" To me, the thing that makes him awesome is that he's a blend of both. But I recognize that everybody's going to have different opinions on what the ideal ratio of chocolate to pretzel will be. Like a lot of people here, I like a heavy dose of commando. But without the ninja, he's just a pretzel. Or just chocolate. Or something.
