Some good ideas herein. I'm not sure how invested Hasbro is in representing the military accurately (or well). That is, I'm not sure they want to sell Stratego to a Halo culture.
And, I agree on LH. I can't imagine my thoughts are popular, but I felt he needed to be told "less Ninjas" and "more Joes," or to be given a spin-off of the Arashikage-verse while someone else handled the Joe team. The last third of the original run was some tough reading with harsh-to-awful artwork. Still, I reread them from time to time because it's the Joes. Quote:
GI Joe doesn't really tell a story that builds on itself anymore, like it did from '82 until '90-ish. Cobra Command was a ruthless terrorist organization determined to rule the world, and somebody's got to stop them. It was a machine that fed itself.
Then things started to repeat themselves or Hasbro lost its direction. Space aliens, neon colors. Even by the end of the Marvel run, Hama seemed to be phoning it in. But at the beginning, Hama and Trimpe (both veterans), gave life and fire to the story that I doubt few other creators could have. During the NS era, the toy creators seems to actually be interested in telling stories with the figures again. Sure, some of it was human-animal hybrid themed, but the line did generate a lot of new characters. Most of which have drifted into obscurity, sadly. Hasbro doesn't appreciate what it has, and falls back on the same core characters over and over and over. From a return on investment standpoint, that's safe. They know a Snake-Eyes figure will sell. Make a new character and it might be a peg warmer. Hasbro needs to find people to run GI Joe that: 1. Understand how to craft a story, even one created to sell toys 2. That story has to organically need new characters added to it to grow 3. It wouldn't hurt for Hasbro to make an effort to try to add some military flavor back into GI Joe. The first wave of Classified figures didn't really look too military, especially with the Nerf arsenals. The newer figures seem to be drifting in the right direction, though. 4. A good start would be for Hasbro to hire military advisors for the line. Veterans and/or history enthusiasts who could draw from their own experiences or historical events, respectively, to world build. |

Agreed on ninja stuff.
Ninjas, like cheese, works best as a topping, but not the main ingredient. (Aside from an occasional grilled cheese sandwich.) In the earlier appearances, the ninjas were bad-ass, but not impervious to defeat. Roadblock basically slugged Storm Shadow in the head and took him out. Hama NEVER would have written that later in the line. If the ninjas weren't written like mystical superheroes that also wouldn't dialed down the stupid. |

I'm also an easy sucker for more ninjas. I wonder if there's a correlation. |

I liked the use of the Arashikage-verse as it pertained to rescuing Stalker, etc. The Unknown Soldier-type origins for SE and the Vietnam roots were more interesting to me and that made arcs like Scarlett's affection and Destro/Firefly attacking SE's cabin that much more mysterious. Storm Shadow's "death" on Cobra Island was one of the most intense moments in the run. Then...
I would guess that Roadblock could serve up a mean grilled cheese sandwich, too. Quote:

I didn't know there was a National Cheese Day, so you're likely more of a cheese aficionado than I am. But I do like me some cheese, again- in a supporting role, and have lately taken to the versatile goodness that is Gouda.
Gouda is surprisingly good on pizza, baloney sandwiches, or as a "turbo booster" cheese for grilled cheese sandwiches. That's how I imagine Roadblock would make them. |

I agree. I've always followed Joe / Cobra primarily for the Arashikage storyline, but for every Storm Shadow, Jinx, Slice, Dice or Night Creeper, there should be 15 Recondo, Night Creeper, Footloose, Flash or a new Dreadnok. Less is more.

That issue also includes one of the rare instances of Storm Shadow using a gun. |

It's hard to add new characters (they just did though in the current story arc), because they have way too many already. Majority of GI Joe and Cobras have almost zero story interaction, they might say a single word bubble in the entire history of the comic series or only appear without dialogue in the background. Even when a character did get some comic time moments to shine, it was purely action and there no character development or interaction really. Such a giant cast doesn't really work for a single book, they need to be spread out over various media properties and built up over time.
