I went with the idea that this would be a serious movie, not a MegaForce, Cannon Pictures kind of thing. I also didn’t want any super-roided out 80s dudes, so no Sly or Arnie. Real soldiers are rarely built like body builders. Heavy ARAH influence with just enough Sunbow to keep the kids happy.
Joe Colton - Lee Marvin, someone older but that screams back-in-the-day-badass to the audience. Hawk- Robert Redford, he was aging out of action roles at this point, but he’s great and did a great job as a general in Bridge Too Far Duke- Kurt Russell. I was torn between him and Michael Beihn. Scarlett- Kelly Slater…young, but capable of playing a serious character, see Legend of Billie Jean. Stalker- Fred Williamson.. Stalker has to be the older, seen some shit sergeant, and someone you’d believe was busting heads in Detroit as a teenager. Snake Eyes- This one is real tough. I liked Michael Beihn for this as well, but I didn’t want to waste him in this slot, so I’m not sure who for unmasked, but definitely JCVD in the suit. He wouldn’t be above suit work at this point either… he was the original choice for the Predator. Flint- Micheal Beihn. Because he has to be in this. Lady Jaye- I’m really stuck. There just wasn’t many badass women action stars in the 80s… at least ones who could act. I allowed myself four minor Joe characters. I wanted Rip and Spirit for sure because they were central to some of my favorite ARAH issues, and Shippy and RB because you’ve got to have some tip to Sunbow in the movie. Shipwreck- Judd Nelson. Not an action guy really, be I think he could pull it off with some work and he’s got the wise-ass fuck up aspect of Sunbow Shippy down. Ripcord- Charlie Sheen. Spirit- Sonny Landham, because duh. Roadblock - Bill Duke, because 80s Bill Duke was a scary fucking guy. Cobra commander- Willem Dafoe. This was a hard one. I’m an ARAH guy 100 percent, but the image of Sunbow Coco is just so pervasive. I wanted someone who could realistically be a leader that people would follow, who could be charming in that slimy politician way one second, and then cold as fucking ice the next. See his Norman Osbourne for this. If we were doing paranoid ranting Sunbow Coco then I would have going with Brad Dourif. Destro- Charles Dance. Underrated actor, really tall, can do a Scottish accent. Baroness- Ornella Muti… she was Princess Aura in Flash Gordon. She’s raven haired, has an accent, and looks hot as fuck in a leather catsuit. My alternate was Isabella Adjani.. same, and looks damn good in glasses. Bludd- Vernon Wells, who else really? Zartan- Christopher Lambert. Storm Shadow- Hiroyuki Sanada Hard Master- Tetsuro Tamba. My original pick was Sonny Chiba, but he’s a little young. I’m also pretty convince Larry had TT in mind when he drew the Hard Master. Soft Master- Victor Wong, AKA Egg Shen from Big Trouble in Little China. I would have preferred a Japanese actor, but you need someone who can pull off the Yoda when he’s’ pretending to not know who Yoda is vibe for the Soft Master. Blind Master- Woody Strode, old but can still kick your ass. Jinx- another tough one. I wanted someone close enough in age to be a live interest for Billy, and I’m stumped on this one. Billy- Keanu Reeves. If age Billy up to about 16 for the movie. Keanu played a teenager throughout the 80s and into the 90s and can do action, unlike most of the other young actors of the time I can think of.

John McTiernan's kick-ass action trilogy should've gone as follows:
Predator (1987) Die Hard (1988) G.I. Joe (1989) |
