Your kind of overthinking it. Don't overthink it. Get on yojoe.com and check out the modern figures of the characters you know. If you like those go to ebay and do a search fore those one and get them. Start from there. Gotta remember they are just toys not meant to be that stressful.
I really appreciate all your comments, and advices Im going for some Cobra figures I like (Viper, Alley Viper, Crimson Guard, B.A.T., Night Viper...) Those are my guys ;) |

I would add that there is one era of GI Joe that has not been mentioned: The "Sigma 6" era.
While many collectors dislike it because they were out of their preferred scale and very much had "animated" sci-fi heavy styling, I would argue that Sigma 6 Joes were some of the best Joe TOYS (as in...things to be played with) of the last 20 years or so. If you're interested in sharing your hobby with your son, you might want to give them a peek, the base figures are very durable while still being decently poseable, and they have fun modular play-features and often tons of accessories. Don't know what the secondary market looks like on them, though. And to be clear, I'm speaking of the 8" figures, not the 2.5" scale "Mission Series" (even if that one had some stellar vehicles that sadly never got replicated in 3.75" form, though a few of them did). That's no knock on the 3.75" stuff which is great and my preferred scale as well, but I feel like they've moved away from being "toys" to being "collectibles." Just offering a perspective on a product line that hadn't been mentioned yet. |

Oh yeah, I almost forgot Sigma 6! They are in fact really really good! They aren’t traditional Joes, but they are amazing fun figures!

I almost bought a couple of these several times but Im a 4 inch snob. If they shrunk them down I would have got some of them.
