Has anyone read the new Skybound Joes?? Predictions? Hopeful? Thoughts??
I saw an interview with the writer, Joshua Williamson today on YouTube and I have to be honest, it sounds terrible. The take sounds terrible, the direction, the Energon Universe, Baroness being on the Joe team sounds lazy. I really don't understand why they can't get a decent writer with a fresh take on this. I mean, Cobra as the one bad guy for the Joes seems tired. Let's look at the US Military, they have Al-Qaeda, Hamas, Hezbollah, ISIS, Al-Shabaab, Boko Haram, all as terror organizations and they have to deal with on the regular. Why is there only the Cobras? Can't we get another group for the Joes to fight a war on two fronts?? Why do they continue to use the same 5 characters with such a deep bench of cool characters?? When are they going to make some new Joes/Cobras to refresh things up a bit?? The writer's take seemed like it clearly comes form a guy who has no real experience in anything other than writing comics which is like a guy who knows nothing about finance writing a book about finance? It all seems really underwhelming. The phrase for writers, "write what you know" doesn't seem to apply here. He seems to have no real understanding of the military, terrorism, espionage, etc., he just has an idea about Joes that seems more a facsimile than anything that is gonna grab a reader. His description seemed really disappointing. George Lucas understood WWII and based Star on WWII on so many layers from tactics to history, etc. and re-skinned it with science-fantasy. This new writer has no understanding of terrorism and how to reskin it it with the comic world of the Joes. That's why the original SW worked, because it was grounded in something and layered with Sci-Fa (not sci-fi). I was really hopeful and was fully prepared to give Skybound all of my money but I am not even sure I am going to buy the first issue based on the current from the writer's own words. I just wish someone would get the Joes right and breath a much needed new life into the best property in current comics. |

Because Joe fans will always support whatever nonsense Hama is pumping out over anything new and creative when given the choice.

It would've been cool if Hasbro had partnered with Skybound to come-up with a new version of G.I. Joe, with new characters, a new conflict, etc.
I guess that's not how it's done anymore. |

It just seems super lazy. I mean, they could really drill down on a lot of stuff with GI Joe and do all kinds of stuff. Bring in a new threat where the Joes need to address things on two fronts. Launch a title of new recruits. Use MARS and Destro like a real arms dealer. Use Extensive Enterprise in a real way and have all kinds of challenges globally.
It's the same 5 characters, Duke, Snake Eyes, Roadblock, Scarlett, Flint on missions. The same Cobras, Storm Shadow, Baroness, etc. They haven't used the FLAGG in years. They have characters who have never been in the comics they could use. The energon thing is really lame. Fine, you want to do that universe, ok. But do a few different titles and do a series where each issue is a stand alone mission unrelated where they can use different characters or small groups as the main protagonists so we can see new ones in action. It's like this property will never evolve. That writer seemed like a real hack with told old tropes and no real understanding of geoplitics he could use to reskin with Joe as th veneer. It's really sad. It's like they need a fresh take and no one is willing to do. Skybound was supposed to be the savior and it seems like they will drop the ball..... |

I’ll look for that YouTube interview! I’m worried about the emerging universe, as it seems Joe really comes out on the losing end of that one, but I’ve like what Skybound has done so far with Void Rivals and Transformers, so I’m willing to give it a chance.
I remember loving things like the Cobra Civil War arc, and I usually say I stray to the realism side of Joe comics. A while ago though I realized that a lot of the more realistic military comics were tough to make interesting (for me at least). When all the characters have realistic uniforms, it’s tough to tell them apart. For many of the Cobra villains, they have qualities that are fun. I’d have a hard time making some ISIS Suicide bomber my avatar, but somehow Cobra is far enough removed from reality that I don’t mind. I agree that they’re a million under developed characters in Joe, and I hope we get to many of them, but I’m looking forward to seeing how baroness changes sides. I hate the origin where he name is “deCobray”, so I’m hoping it’s more like the one where she was a spoiled heiress who became radicalized by anarchy or some “-ism”. If the new book can make me believe she’s a Joe, AND make me believe she switches sides I’m in. I’m also curious how they get across her name problem. It’s not quite as bad as saying that a guy who calls himself Sinestro was a great Green Lantern that everyone loved, but it’s in the same neighborhood. Anyway, I’m looking forward to new GI Joe. |

Are you complaining about Hama's continuation of the ARAH continuity, or about the new Duke and Cobra Commander books in the Energon Universe continuity? None of these have actually released yet, so I don't know what kind of review you're expecting. Seems like you're just complaining for the sake of complaining.
The first two issues of Skybound's Transformers were pretty good, and Duke made a decent cameo in issue 2 (which also has a couple-page preview of his solo book at the end that looks OK). I'm willing to give this the benefit of the doubt. YMMV. |

Lol. I didn't realize Duke was already introduced. Too bad Duke is in my lowest tier of characters I get excited about.

Hamas run has become so painful that I just can’t any more.
The shared universe with transformers is also a terrible idea Not interested at all.
