ARAH comics first, but Renegades a close second. This sounds weird but I also really like Rise of Cobra too

I'm kind of all over the place between comics and cartoon, but I would skew slightly more towards Sunbow for a lot of the characters. Although a lot of them are pretty similar across different iterations anyway.

True, to a certain extent. Some characters are glaringly different, such as, Bazooka (he isn't an oaf in the comics), and Roadblock (who doesn't spout rhymes in said comics).

Serpentor is much more slimy and underhanded in Larry Hama's stories.

I’ll go by character:
General Hawk is in charge of the Joes, as in Hama, and has the Hama personality. But his appearance is the 1986 figure, including brown hair. Duke is the Sunbow Duke in every way. For me, Duke and Roadblock were original picks for the Joe team that were unavailable until they completed a different assignment. Maybe wrapping up Blue Light, for example. Roadblock is Hama’s Roadblock, but with the Sunbow voice. He does joke around occasionally with his Sunbow rhymes, but only every now and then, to emphasize a point or lighten the mood. Scarlett did have a slight thing with Duke early on, before he was officially a Joe or her superior, but he’s now her older brother and she has lived the entire Hama story from some of the earliest Joe days with Snake Eyes. She has the Sunbow voice though. Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow and the Arashikage are as Hama describes them, except Zartan’s Arashikage background never happened. (Although it’s kind of a beautiful story imo.) Stormy does not have the Sunbow voice. The thing where he beat up a tank and scolded the Dreadnoks totally did happen, but more as a stunt pulled off with the help of Scrap Iron. Flint, Lady Jaye, and Gung Ho are straight-up Sunbow, though Flint usually wore the black shirt the figure had, and though Lady Jaye did grow her hair out and move in a bombshell direction by the later years. Cobra Commander and Destro both encompass their Hama and Sunbow versions pretty equally. Both are very complicated people, after all, and I actually find that their portrayals mesh really well. Both have their Sunbow voices. Baroness also draws heavily on both, but she also has a big dose of her earlier political ideas that both source materials understandably kind of gloss over, so her way of mixing Hama and Sunbow works differently. Zartan is essentially the Sunbow Zartan, but he has so much in common with the comics one that I’m not sure what to mention as a difference, except for that cool but apocryphal Arashikage angle I mentioned before. Firefly doesn’t get much from either source. Bludd and the Dreadnoks are pretty much the same in both, with the great Sunbow voices. Mindbender has the Sunbow voice too. Serpentor is always fun, and I usually imagine his different origin stories as conflicting intelligence reports the Joes have heard, rather than solid facts. He may have said “this I command!” at times, but not incessantly as he does in the toon. The 1986 character work on Beach Head, Low Light, Lifeline, and others is all real. Beach Head definitely has that voice and abrasive personality. So does Shipwreck from the previous year, though his “origin story” is actually just a tall tale he tells new recruits, as are many of the wilder Sunbow occurances. He and Clutch do tease a lot, but not in the HR-able way they do in the show. Torpedo and Deep Six are the same cold fish as in the show. As far as the overall story of Joe vs Cobra, the broad strokes history is the Hama version, but most of the Sunbow events that weren’t too crazy really did happen, including things like MASS device and Weather Dominator. That said, not every fateful car crash in one person’s life happened to involve the family of someone on the other side. Hama is broadly and generally the main story, not rigidly or exceptionlessly. At one point, the Joes were at Wadsworth. They did have the Sunbow base for a while, at a time when it seemed reasonable to draw Cobra out into the open, and then ended up mostly in Utah, with smaller SF, NYC, and Chicago hubs as well, pretty much one per time zone. I haven’t read other author’s takes on Joe, or seen much of the more recent toons, but I’m sure I’ll incorporate some things from them whenever I do. I have seen Dic, though. Metal Head does have a granny like that, but he is not quite as rockheaded as the show makes him out to be. Bang, bang! |

ARAH and IDW. I also liked some of the characters in "disavowed".
Hawk is the leader, hands down. I like how Duke was initially introduced in ARAH at Flagg's funeral as a crusty old badass leader, but he kind of morphed into a general purpose action hero. By and large, the comics were more serious with more time for character development than the cartoons or movies. |

Thanks for the tip! Where do you come down on some of these questions? I saw your reply about the Arashikage, and Serpentor and Roadblock‘s rhymes, but outside of that, who has the largest differences in your opinion? Which of those do you like more? Do you take one over the other, or mix them?
