Same for Scarlett, I always considered the cross bow as more of a secondary weapon, and I don't think Hama depicted her in the comics as using the cross bow as much as a machine gun, but I could be wrong there. I'd have to go back and look at the old Marvel series. I also got the idea that Hasbro didn't want the female figures to have traditional military weapons. In the 80s, it didn't seem that any female figure just came with a machine gun. Even Baroness had a "laser rifle." Maybe there was an issue with portraying females as combatants. Jason |

More likely, Hasbro simply felt women (who little boys often find mysterious/alien) required weapons which were equally unique/exotic.

Knowing how much James Bond and GI Joe have in common, maybe Melina Havelock using a crossbow throughout For Your Eyes Only in 1981 was an influence.

Well, first of all: kid's toy.
Second, it's part of the grand kid's toy/cartoon tradition of each individual of the "team" having their own signature thing. Finally, I still use Spirit's sweet-ass dart rifle as a sort of "silent weapon". It's something I asked my dad about when I was a kiddo, and after squinting at it for a moment, he said each dart appeared to have a compressed air "charge" attached to it and it was probably a deadly sniper weapon that killed without noise or muzzle flash. The same could be said for Scarlett's crossbow. It's about stealthy shit.

In the Devil's Due "Scarlett: Declassified" one-shot (circa 2007), a DoD agent comes up to her, during target practice, and simply sez: "try this". Yeah...that creative.

This is an extension of the fantasy aspects of the property. I DO like fantasy , and Sci-Fi, in the property, but I prefer it when it's the Joes (grounded in near-future verisimilitude) who are fighting against robots and/or monsters.

TBH i replaced my Classified Scarletts crossbow with a spare Snake eyes gun. I hate the idea of just a few shots and then you're out of ammo. On Beachheads i always saw it as a "Load it, fire it one, then drop it till later and back to the rifle" backup. Or maybe a situational stealth killer.
