I was in an old Target Greatland today and it brought back memories of the 'old days' of collecting. This was the same Target where, in 1994, I got the last series of Star Brigade.
Its the same Target, where, in 2002, I got the first series of Joe vs Cobra. Then, it was the same store where I first saw the ROC figures. How much things have changed in all my years collecting. The pre-internet era was much less of a community-based hobby. We were pretty much on our own. I remember buying the DeSimone guides - and I remember talking to James via 'letters' a couple times, and running into him a couple small conventions... but that was it. I had the James DeSimone convention exclusive Jinx for years... but finally sold it to a fellow collector - I still regret that sale. Anyone have any good stories from the old days? Lets hear them. |

I used to go to child world, then toysrus bought the empty building when they closed, then when the new mall opened trus went across the street from there, but now a target exists, there now, so I have bought joes from the 80s thru now at 3 diff stores, but in the same building, ah life is great.

1994, U.S.S. Intrepid. What a great Con that was. "Hasbro International G.I.Joe Convention".
*EDIT* - Oops, hit save too fast. That was my first Con. I was 17. Not too long after, I sold my entire G.I.Joe Collection at a store not too far away, in the Village, called "Loves Saves The Day". I thought that Con was my "Goodbye" to toys. I was going to be 18 soon. Time to "grow up". |

This is a post internet story, but pre Joe collecting/Joe website days for me:
In 2001 I moved to NC from Florida. I found a TRU out by a closed down mall up here and went in, it was a nice reminder of my youth since the store was still set up like the TRU back home used to be (the other TRU up here had changed it's lay out) I walked back to the action figure aisle and saw they had a few signs up showing a brand name item, well one of them showed this awesome looking blue Hiss! I searched all over but couldn't find one, but I did find the reissues of the Mobat, Awe-Striker and Sharc (Now a Cobra vehicle) It still wasn't enough to get me fully collecting Joes (Transformers were still my world) but it was a nice re-visit of my childhood |

That show was the first time I saw the Dave Dorman artwork that was done for GIJoe. They had quite a few of the original pieces there for sale. Last edited by captain mal; 08-14-2009 at 09:09 AM.. |
