No wrong answers here , just convo and seeing where Firefly plays in your Joe verse:
I’ve worked on a few Fireflys and in doing so, I’ve read a lot of history to bring him to life. In doing so, his birthplace has always been classified. I’ve read a few sites who strongly point out he could be French due his father Fighting in French Indochina (Vietnam) which kind of makes sense but so did Snake Eyes Storm Shadow and Stalker. Quote:
Just watch Empire Strikes Back, even. I mean, seriously, it takes a very special kind of stupid to disparage a character whose entire narrative purpose is "solve problems that even fucking Darth Vader can't handle." Last edited by CADPAT; 03-12-2021 at 12:48 AM.. |

Although I am a big fan of Brandon Jerwa's unpublished Master and Apprentice III Firefly storyline. While Devil's Due had the license, the ran two limited series called Master and Apprentice and then a sequel with a II next to the name. So Jerwa wrote Master and Apprentice which was about Snake-Eyes and Kamakura. He went into their relationship and training and also used Firefly as a villain, exploring that character in greater detail. Later Jerwa also wrote Master and Apprentice 2. This one was about Storn Shadow and Junko Akita. I think I got that name right from memory. She was his apprentice and I think love interest as well. She will be in the upcoming Snake-Eyes movie. Jerwa had intended to create a Master and Apprentice 3. He might have even written part of it, I can't remember. This one was going to be about Firefly and his apprentice Firefly. Master and Apprentice 3 would explain that there were always two Firefly characters in the Joe mythos, and that the Faceless Master was not always the Firefly of Cobra. So there was the French Indochino Firefly, and another more mysterious one. One was specifically an explosives expert and saboteur, the other was a gifted ninja master. This would explain his inconsistencies in the "Marvel half" / first half of ARAH. This story would also tie together the three miniseries into a M+A trilogy which went full circle. It's too bad it was never published. Whenever I think about Firefly being the Red Ninja Leader I just remember this unpublished story and say "that's right, I know something other readers don't." Lol.

I'm gonna expand on this. I always took Firefly to be probably a former special ops explosives expert who went into business for himself after he got out of the military. (Sort of like the various mercenaries who would show up on 80's tv shows like Airwolf) I think this makes him particularly effective against the Joes, since he would have previous experience with their type of methods. I always saw him as intelligent and ruthless, but with a sense of humor, like an evil Dalton-era Bond or something, but with just a hint of enjoying blowing stuff up too much. I always made him view himself as basically just a small businessman/private contractor who enjoys his work and wants to keep doing it. Also used to make him a default arch-nemesis to Snake Eyes.

As for the Boba ref, disagree. Yeah Hama mistreat Firefly and the silly Ninja backstories (Then again who did Not have one in GI JOE LOL). However Boba Fett back from when he First graced our presence to Now. No Sir Boba Fett certainly is Not whiny Ass. Always liked that character and cemented even moreso with a proper Mando now in the TV show HAHAHA Plus own spin Off. FINALLY! Firefly/Boba Fett actually could be similar in many ways. The Credits for Job well done. |

Awesome concepts and fan lore.
Even though I started this thread I didn’t even post my view on it; so here it is. Firefly was a war child. His Father fought and Died in IndoChina,in which Firefly was adopted by the Koga Ninjas. Although mastering this fighting style, it was soon to be just another advantage to his future ways and skills. He traveled back to America( his Home) and learned the ways of the Joes, by entering Ranger school .I. Which he also accelerated at this with flying colors. He travels as. Military contractor in which he meets IRA and ISIS who teach him the ways of total sabotage. He excels . Builds trust . And keeps alliances. He’s smart. Extremely wise. And now a mastermind at knowing 2 ways to war as well as future enemies strategy. At this time he is neurtral . And his Camo pick honors this way. He has a family , and all though being a Merc, he holds high standards and principles for his enemies. Unfortunately his family is killed as COW, and Joes are to blame. He goes into a mid state of no return. And the world will burn for the pain it has caused him. Firefly answers to no one. But will destroy anything for financial gain. This is my brief version of Fireflys Origins. I don’t believe he looked at snake eyes when tasked to kill him and said “I’m outmatched”. Firefly is a busy man. “Give this bullshit job to a Nok.”

Before his French-Indochina origins were exposed it the Marvel comic, as a kid, just going by his card art, for some reason I imagined him a swamp rat from Louisiana or the Everglades, US Army and Engineering experience, then mercenary recruited by Cobra!

Rescued by US military after his family was killed by the Khmer Rouge, Firefly made his way to the US and enlisted in the Army when he was of age. He worked his way up the ranks through Ranger school and EOD, but still desired to return home to seek revenge against those responsible for killing his family.

The only thing I know, is that he is not a friggin Ninja!!! More than anything he is American, and with the new figure being blue eyed, it's looking like canon. To me, he is just a great saboteur, and the less we know, the better. We don't need mysterious characters' history, like Firefly, spelled out for us. It's part of the fun not knowing, or speculating.

I assume this forum requires a few regular replies before you can post a new thread, so I'm commenting here.
He was played by Irishman Ray Stevenson in the movie, so that makes sense to me, plus Stevenson is great. And my favorite Firefly quote is after the Baroness yelled "Cobraaaa!" he cried out, "for personal survival and the promises of riches!" |
