The Duke was exclusive too (until China made some on Chinese cards). He was actually made using the TF Duke mold in V1 colors (basically Cobra Trooper waist piece). I don't remember if his sleeves were the rolled version (live V1) or elastic cuff version (TF) though but for a time, the Takara version of Duke was the only way you can get him that way. I think the Chinese carded Duke though had the Cobra Trooper waist and the TF elastic cuff sleeves. I just can't remember if the Japanese one had those sleeves or the originals. For vehicles, all the Joe vehicles had unique stickers as all US Flags and mentions of United States were replaced by that white eagle logo you see on the Joe packages. Additionally, the Vamp came with a tan Clutch instead of the original green one.

Oh, and a name or two were switched for no reason. I believe Duke was called "Grunt."

So, I was wrong about Duke. The Japanese Duke mostly was the same as the US release. However, some later ones had the Stalker/Grunt v1 arms though.
The one I mentioned that used the Tiger Force Duke mold which has Hit N Run lower arms and Cobra Trooper waist was the domestic Chinese released version of Duke.

That's a good point Sevenlima makes. It's become fairly standard practice (for most U.S. products) to remove any/all "overtly patriotic" imagery prior to foreign distribution. Perhaps Takara didn't bother because Japan is an ally? As I'd imagine the card art looks very different on the Chinese, North Korean and Iranian releases.

Going back over the list, I wondered if there were any other name changes.
Duke is "Grunt." Cobra Trooper is "Cobra Soldier." But I looked on yojoe and that's pretty much what he was always called, so no big deal. The last one is the oddest. Rock N' Roll is named....."Mick." Or, as it's spelled phonetically in Japanese katakana "ミック". Mick. What the hell is that supposed to mean? |

The logo replaced "A Real American Hero" with "The International Heroes," but the packaging is very similar to the American original. The product is still called G.I. Joe and the logo still displays very American red, white, and blue stripes. I do not know how popular G.I. Joe was in China at the time. |

I really loved how the Chinese cards literally translated their names. Flint's name is literally written in Chinese as Fire Rock.
When I had that figure though, he was my TF Falcon. As for "A Real American Hero", even in Canada, they removed that. It's just blank in that area.
