I ripped the clip from the making of "Apocalypse Now" where Coppola is directing Martin Sheen in the hotel scene, goading him on about how pretty his mouth and hair is and how he looks like a movie star.
That's what inspired me to start this thread. If you're so inclined, you can listen to it here. It's just audio and you don't have to download anything, just hit play. No login or download or anything...just hit play. https://vocaroo.com/1oHTaz3GRLJ5 Just go here and hit "play." The voices are Francis Ford Coppola, his wife, and Martin Sheen. I think I timed it right when Sheen breaks the mirror. Yeah, it's a bit out there, but it got me thinking of Snake Eyes for some reason, and that's why I started this thread. After all, there's no denying he's the best dressed Joe. |

As far as I can tell, Coppola's military experience was limited to attending a military high school for a short period. I'm not sure his opinion on the vanity of Special Forces soldiers in Vietnam has much merit. SE stands out due to his lack of color, not the flashiness of his uniforms. Almost any other non-O13 would appear more vain next to SE (v1-3). Gung Ho comes to mind.

Snake is a simple man with simple tastes. He’s pretty much the last Joe I’d ever categorise as vain, every insight we’ve ever gotten into his character suggests a quiet, confident but not remotely egotistical chap.

Well in the real world...we know he's a toy and the most popular toy in the line, so the sculptors are gonna have fun putting in all kinds of bells and whistles.
I'm not saying any of this is true or not, but I remember the quote from Coppola and just made me think that could potentially be an "in-universe" explanation for why he has all this intricate custom gear that none of the others do, from the "knight visors" to the random bits of red on an otherwise black and silver outfit. I know why the toy is designed and colored the way it is. I was just brainstorming for perhaps some psychological motivation from the mystery man himself. Never meant to imply anything else! |

Guys it simple and doesn't really need to be dwelled on. Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow are brothers. The yin to the yang. Yin is Storm Shadow and Yang is Snake Eyes. Hence one wears black and one wears white. Together they bring balance.

Yeah it's so simple that when Snake Eyes was created, Storm Shadow didn't exist.
And then when Storm Shadow was created, the writers on the cartoon chose to pair him off with Spirit as his main adversary cause they're "yin to yang." Also, they're not brothers. Anyway, I could further rip apart the stupidity of that post, but that's impolite so I'll stop here. |

They are not blood brothers but they are brothers by close friendship. I believe Storm Shadow has even called him that several times. The relationship to snake eyes was already thought up even before it appeared. Just because they didn't talk about it in the toon or comic doesn't mean the relationship did not exist. No need to be a jerk because your hiding behind a computer. Remember we are talking about cartoons and toys.

We've discussed the origins of the original plastic figures many times over the decades. I'm not here to retread shit I wrote about in depth ten years ago just to bring the newbies up to speed.
I saw a classic military movie; it struck a chord with me, and it also made me see Snake Eyes in a new light. Some soldiers write stuff on their gear and personalize it..."Come get some!" and stuff like that. Snake Eyes spends his time polishing and honing his knives, which are extension of his uniform and himself. Maybe the concept of a man that lost everything trying to piece the few scraps of his life together by making sure he's the baddest looking thing on a battlefield right before he puts his enemies' lights out permanently is too difficult for some of you to grasp. Maybe you'd be happier complaining about how empty the pegs at Target are. |
