So, I was tinkering with some of my collection today and I cannot get Zartan to change colors... I'm wondering if this is simply from the passage of time or a possible variant, but either way it's disturbing. Any thoughts out there?

if it doesn't darken in sunlight, then the special plastic has gotten too old to react anymore. But then Hasbro wasn't expecting people to keep the toys in one piece for so many years.

Yeah, it wear out over time. I remember freezing him in a cup of water, putting the frozen block out in the sun, and watching him change colors through the ice. Ah, good times.

ugh, that makes me so sad to have that confirmed from others. I tried leaving him in hot water for awhile, leaving him in the sun on the windowsill, everything I could think of.
That makes me wonder, if it's simply a passage of time thing then the ones still SMIB don't work anymore either.... sad sad sad It's like a small piece of childhood was quietly rapped, abducted, and shipped overseas... yes... it's that serious. RIP zartan

Not ALL of them are dead.
I have a MOC Japanese Zartan that still changes color. I believe that the color changing properties only degrade when being used repeatedly. The MOC Zartan I have was stored most of its life in a light-controled environment (that's what the guy on Ebay told me). I remember driving home for lunch one day and he was there in my mailbox. I opened him as I was driving back to work and sat him on the passenger seat. When I got back to work, I reach over to get him cuz I was gonna put him in my trunk for safe keeping. I look at the figure and it's a beautiful shade of blue. I was like "holy shit! I forgot he changed color!". |

Too true, soon after my last post I was doing a little more reading on the matter... Turns out ACTUALLY written in the skier blueprints with zartan is written that he WILL NOT change colors if the sunlight is through a pane of window glass, which I was doing. So I gathered up most of my zartan parts and went outside (luckily it's sunny today). Here is what I found...
These are all the parts in the sun and the effects I observed. The one on the left was the one I had that wasn't changing. Just found out it was the face. So I swaped some parts after I soaked his lower torsos in boiling water for 10 secs... POPt'em open and created a really sweet zartan from my parts that DEFINITELY changes colors.. The end result of my efforts... All in all, worth the trouble.

All this talk of Zartan's color change in the Classified thread made me curious.
I dug out my 1984 Zartan and set him outside for a few minutes. It's a very bright and sunny day. No change. That's disappointing. I have one on a Japanese card that I bought in Tokyo about 15 years ago, but has been sitting in a dark closet ever since. Maybe I'll pull that out and put it in the sun and see if it's really true that exposure to the sun is a factor or not I imagine it's just age. The figure is almost 40 at this point, so I wouldn't be surprised if the gimmick just plain doesn't work anymore. Anyone else able to get a color change in their vintage Zartans in 2022? |

I took some photos of Zartan, Zarana, and the Dreadnok Air Assault set in 2020 and they were still working then. Thought I posted them here somewhere but I don't find them in my Imagebb folder now.

I know, right? Almost 40 years now. Hasbro probably didn't expect these toys to survive even three years let alone 4 decades. They are kitschy ephemera of the 80s, basically, but ephemera collecting (like old postcards or magazines etc) is probably kind of important, actually.
