I have pretty much skipped the new sculpt era with the exception of the Thunderwing because it is just a fantastic toy. The figs from this generation seemed to suffer from small heads, gorilla arms and the dreaded T-crotch so I dismissed the whole lot.
Yesterday I found myself scrolling through Yo Joe and looking at these figs, and maybe I was in a weird mood, but I was impressed with many of them. Clearly there are stinkers for some of the reasons I mentioned but many are pretty cool. For those who have these figs in their collections what are your thoughts? |

There were certainly some excellently sculpted figures but the line, overall, suffered from poor proportions. That being said, many had great designs that just were hampered by the lackluster sculpting. Vehicles were great, though.

I brought this era up a few months back and what you two have said pretty much sums it up. They did hit some home runs with figures but most of them have the ridiculous proportions - moon shoes, long legs/short torsos, t-crotches etc.
They really started hitting their stride with the later VvV and DTC stuff if you ask me. Their are some good figs/vehicles there. Some of the vehicles are great but more toyish than quasi-realistic military (if that makes sense). Ironically that era saw the release of the Desert, Jungle Strike and Night Ops humvees which were based ins realism and the best Humvess in the 3 3/4" scale. My Christmas present to myself is going to be a MIB Thunderwing Jet |

I have 1 complete and 1 partial - I really do like it but both I have do have some blemishes so I'd like to get one near mint version. I still can't remember why I never purchased one back in 2003/2004 because I collected this line heavily.

The Thunderwing is excellent! The Patriot Grizzly is pretty fun too. My son and I used to set up Cobra figures on the floor and use the Grizzly to shoot them down. That's one cool action feature for a tank.

The Night Attack Chopper is pretty sweet as well. Both it and the Thunderwing are amazing toys but I would rank the Thunderwing just a little higher. |

That era is full of weird figures for sure, but there are some real gems, and as HitandRun said the line generally got better over time. A few of my favs:
SE v23 CC v13 Snow Serpent v7 both Wild Bill sculpts Cobra Coils (I've designated as modern Motor-Vipers) Grunt Dart Major Barrage Interrogator I also collected this line pretty extensively, and agree that some of the vehicles especially shine. I too missed out on the Thunderwing but picked up 2 each of the DTC RHINO, ROCC, HISS, and Night Ops Humvee from a mall toy store in late 2005, and I find them to be among the best vehicles ever made. And since they don't rely heavily on foot or back pegs, they all work equally well for modern and o-ring figures which is a huge plus. This is also the era that I got the most enjoyment out of customizing. The weird proportions lend a fun challenge to matching parts, and you could more easily differentiate characters by size and bulk when compared to o-ring figures, while still having a back screw, so no cracking/gluing needed. |

It was an odd time, you had the newer sculpts with the big shoulders but also repaints of the old sculpts. I didn't like the newer style figures but jumped on the Cobra Ninja Strike set and the #21 Silent Interlude comic pack with the Ninja Viper.

It was a good toy line for kids, which is something GI Joe has not been ever since they went to the 25th style construction.
The toys are riddled with obvious flaws, aesthetic issues and in many cases have not aged well (cracking torsos, yellowing blue plastic). At the time of their release and to right now however, it was a decent continuation of what made GI Joe fun in the 80's. The toys were bright and fun looking, there was a wide variety of characters available, and the vehicles put a bigger emphasis on play-value (the Thunderwing as you mention, also check out the Ringneck). The lines were far from perfect, and in many cases, far from even being good, but they were made primarily as toys, whereas now, GI Joe is primarily a collectible.
