It was a good toy line for kids, which is something GI Joe has not been ever since they went to the 25th style construction.
The toys are riddled with obvious flaws, aesthetic issues and in many cases have not aged well (cracking torsos, yellowing blue plastic). At the time of their release and to right now however, it was a decent continuation of what made GI Joe fun in the 80's. The toys were bright and fun looking, there was a wide variety of characters available, and the vehicles put a bigger emphasis on play-value (the Thunderwing as you mention, also check out the Ringneck). The lines were far from perfect, and in many cases, far from even being good, but they were made primarily as toys, whereas now, GI Joe is primarily a collectible. These new sculpt figs look like just cool toys that aren’t going to break the bank. |

I've always liked the first new-sculpt BAT, which I think was JvC originally. I army built a bunch of them when they got a single pack release. They do suffer a little bit from the proportion problems that plagued much of the line, but it's easily overlooked with them being bots and all. A killer headsculpt, dope arm attachments, and some very effective drybrushing make them good enough for me to keep in my ME collection.

I have not come across the cracked torso issue with any of my new sculpt figs. I will have to look out for it.

With that said, it rarely seems to affect the figures functionally, so it's not too big of a deal. I definitely think these are way better for kids, and you can still get lots of them for way less than what a handful of ARAH figures will cost you at the moment!

New Sculpt is highly underrated in all the new characters it brought in. Overkill and Scalpel are two of my faves.

I don't believe I've had it happen first hand, but I'm seeing it much more often on figures I've acquired in recent years. It's very similar to the cracking elbows that are common to post '87 figures, and the prevailing notion is that it's caused by the heads expanding and contracting overtime with temperature fluctuations, causing the chest to crack. As such, you'll see cracked torsos even on figures that are still carded, and it affects both New Sculpt figures and classic sculpts that feature new heads (like the gas-mask Cobra Officers that came with Lady Jaye, they're really bad about it.).

I grew up with ARAH Joes, and I love them, but I want to enjoy them but it is hard to see them age. |

Yes, happened to my JvC Destro and Gung Ho. And with several comic pack old sculpt figures, made on that same time.

Thanks for the follow up. I have many ARAH figs and it seems like elbow cracks are creeping into all years but it does seem like the later years are especially bad. I'm also seeing shoulder cracks on the back of the shoulder that propagate just like the elbow cracks.
