I like the creation of Serpentor story a lot but was not a fan of him as a place of power in Cobra. I prefer to think of Serpentor as a battlefield champion not a ruler.

I have a feeling that, like, 90% of my opinions probably fall into this category. But I'll just narrow it down to the two that anybody else might actually agree with. (And stay away from the ones that use terms like "proto-fascist" and "sheeple".)
1) I prefer the various shades of purple that were Cobra's colors of choice in later years over the original "classic" blues. More distinctive, and just looks better, imo. 2) I am CONVINCED that Darklon is not actually wearing a shirt at all, and that his skin really is green. My theory being he was originally intended to be Cobra Commander in "snake person" form. Before Hasbro scrapped that whole idea (after the movie bombed) and just tossed him in with the Iron Grenadiers at the last moment. (Seriously, check out his filecard, it is literally four sentences long.) Now, obviously I can't prove any of that, but no one will ever convince me otherwise.

Cobra Commander is best when a) not a coward, b) starts in blue when he thinks himself this grand liberator but turns to wearing black as he realizes, 'nah fam, I just want it all,' and c) should always be a singular human male American of otherwise forever unknown details. The idea of a faceless American becoming so sick of the government has *never* been more appropriate, only for this would be liberator and leader of people to be the next in-canon American Hitler. I *love* that story, and the cartoonish nature of the series always kept it from being too 'on the nose' or mature.

It's good to note that the idea of a controversial opinion has a great deal to do with main source of GI Joe lore you grew up with: comics or cartoon

I don't really recognize anything in the Lore from the comics or from any episode of the Sunbow show after There's No Place Like Springfield.
So in my Joe unviverse, there's no Serpentor, Hawk, Sgt. Slaughter, Cobra-La, or Vipers, X Vipers, Viper Xs, or whatever. Give me Cobra Commander, blueshirts, Duke, Rattlers, and Skystrikers forever.

I always enjoyed the artwork and voice of Duke’s character in the Sunbow animated cartoons, but even my adolescent mind in 1983 knew that it was wrong for Duke to openly flirt with Scarlett in the episodes, and not a single character had the moral fortitude to put a stop to it.
When General Hawk was added to the cartoon, he seemed too timid to terminate that fraternization, and that wrecked him for me as a leader. In the Marvel comic books, Hawk always came across as a strong leader. I still cringe even to this day when I see Duke and Scarlett behaving that way in those cartoons.

I never read the comics. I watched the cartoon, but it was the figures, blueprints, and file cards that sparked my love of Joe. So the only lore I follow are the FC's.

My controversial opinion - until recently - is that it was all one continuity. One giant continuity that stretched from Sgt. Savage in the 40s to Extreme, COPS, and GI JOE Noir in the future. In between are all the comics, all the adaptations, Action Force and Comandos em Acao, all the Transformers crossovers, all of it. No, it doesn’t work perfectly. Yes, you’d have to fudge a few things here and do some outright retcons there. But overall it works a lot better than you might think.
Of course, this idea was nullified once and for all by the 1-2 punch of the recent GI JOE comic series (where Cobra has taken over the US) and the upcoming Snake Eyes movie. They’re just TOO different to work properly. |

I read the Marvel Comics, and started on the IDW run but lost interest due to the artwork. I loved the comic stories and I was always a fan of the cartoon, but I think I based my guys on the file cards more than anything else as a kid. Now, my CC is seriously influenced by GI JOE Resolute and RENEGADES. He is clearer in focus and cruel like he should be. I also like DUKE from Renegades where he is a leader, but still learning and developing. And I 100% believe that Flint would be the douchey guy he is in RENEGADES.
