I swear I am not trying to stir up trouble or cause controversy, but am I the only one who assumed Duke and Roadblock were a couple in the comics? I kind of assumed that this was the case as a kid for some reason.
For the record, I never gave it much thought and was far more concerned with how Ripcord’s stupid obsession with Candy was going to screw up Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow’s revenge storyline. I have spoken out in the past about my dislike of Duke. I want it noted that it was because a certain media tried to use him to replace Hawk, who was a character I was far more invested in. I do agree that everyone deserves to see him or herself in the worlds that they love. That being said, I can also get behind what people have said about changing established characters. This property is so vast that there is always room for new characters. Last edited by Dusty Ayers; 10-11-2020 at 08:44 AM.. |

There is ZERO place for LGBTQ characters in GiJoe or any other toylines that are intended or sold to children.
Because for them to exist, they would have to explicitly discuss or show their sexuality, which has no place in GiJoe. By the same point, there is ZERO place for straight sexuality in GiJoe. Kids dont care about sexuality and they dont need to exposed to it. By the time I became interested in girls, I no longer cared about GiJoe. That's the way its supposed to be

Like everything else I do not want to see an established character suddenly changed into something else entirely. There are 400+ characters in the Joe mythos many of whom have never had proper character development and more could be created at anytime so no reason to suddenly make drastic changes to a character like Duke, SE or some of others who have had years of development. Gi joe has always been at the forefront of equality so creating a LGQT should be nothing out of the ordinary.
I take issue when new creators decide they want to take some liberties with pre-established characters and suddenly they become something entirely new and more of a walking Stereotype than Something that actually feels like a realistic character. This is often done to push someones own agenda and less about the actual story. Take the case with Aubrey S. I felt his work was more about him using Gi joe to make a statement because he knew his books were not very good and he needed that easy escape by placing blame on the "haters" for the ultimate failure that would have certainly ensued even without his nonsense. LGQT are normal people who just have a different sexual preferences they are not walking caricatures of a certain community.

I am not saying its ok to show full blown man on man or woman on woman or even man on woman going at it but if it happens to be mentioned that Duke is attempting to storm Cobra Island alone because Scarlett is being held captive and he must go because he loves her or if Its covergirl doing the same for Jinx or whatever.

I feel like the bigger threat to kids is having parents that let them play GTA than letting kids see same sex couples in a committed relationship.
Again, which cartoon are we talking about? Resolute or the short lived series in 2010? Not really for kids. The 80’s cartoon? I don’t see them having gay characters since the whole thing was so censored anyways. Let’s have a show about war that never shows the consequences and somehow dudes eject from burning planes at the last minute and the gun shots always seem to miss. My grandfather saw my playing with my Joe’s once and commented ‘how nice it must be to be able to push backpack pegs into holes on someone’s back and send them off to die’. That always stick with me. I didn’t get it at the time, but it was a really poignant thought about the packaging and selling of war to kids and mass consumers. Again, should we be concerned with kids learning about same sec relationships but ignore the horrors of war completely? It’s a fascinating conversation and is more complex than “should kids see two women or men kissing?”. |

With anything geared towards kids I think for the most part you are right but life will always bleed into art. IMO GI Joe did a great job with this back in the 80s with the comics and with Sunbow. Its was touched on that these were adult characters in adult situations but never taken to a point where it became awkward.

I have no gripes about these being War toys. Kids will always play out battles with or without toys. Even as a young kid I knew that what Gi joe did on tv was just a cartoon and an actual war had devastating consequences. My father had friends return home from NAM severely disfigured and many more didn't get to come home at all. My father always told me that there was a big difference from fantasy than life but he still always encouraged me to be a kid while I still had the chance.
It’s up to each parent to figure out is best for their own kids, but as I have said; I’m surprised that this is still seen as a ‘taboo’ subject in this day and age. |

Straight sexuality has already been shown in GI Joe. Flint/Lady Jaye, Destro/Baroness, Scarlett/Snake Eyes, Ripcord/Bongo in the comic. To a lesser extent, Scarlett/Duke and MainFrame/Zarana in the cartoon. Two same sex characters acting in the exact same way would be no different.
