Oh, and to Jymree, I'm so sorry for funking up your quote (and making it sound sorta retarded) in my previous post. I have no clue what happened there.

Me personally It would not bother me what they did with them because I didnt really have a "connection" with them. I honestly couldnt tell you who those guys were accept maybe Charbroil, Starduster, and Blizzard. I wouldnt care if they altered them because it doesnt have any sort of connection with them. My problem is when they do it and it really has nothing do with the making the story better.

I agree with you. SS is definitely one of those characters I was thinking about in the first paragraph ("clearly established histories, relationships, and family ties that already define or at least suggest their race, ethnicity, gender identity, or sexual orientation."). Less so someone like Payload, Countdown, Starduster, Slipstream, Blizzard, Charbroil, Major Altitude, and so on.

This is a question concerning the cartoon versions of RoboCop and Rambo. And the answer is nope. Though all three series (there's a "RoboCop: Alpha Commando" also) were heavily sanitized for children's protection, plus are varying degrees of awful.
FYI both RoboCops can currently be seen on YouTube while "Rambo: The Force of Freedom" is on Dailymotion. I would post links, but legally speaking, that would make me an accomplice. Changing Dusty's hair color hardly seems "minor". For one thing, he now has a substantially higher risk for sunburn and/or melanoma. |

And that, right up there ^^^, is what is meant by "gaining perspective." I always thought I could identify better than most white folks with the non-white experience in this country because I grew up poor and not of the predominant (heavily predominant) religion. Due the the overall lack of diversity in that state during that time period, in a lot of ways I might just as well had been black and Muslim. Now, while I can possibly identify better than some whites, my experience is still nowhere in the same ballpark. This has really been brought home to me a few times in my life.
One important moment was when I lived in New Orleans. A black friend and I were joking around about uncomfortable experiences of being the "lone stranger" in a situation because I was the only white face in that particular jazz club that evening. He said, "The difference is, of course, if you want to feel among your own color, all you have to do is turn on the TV." Another deeply enlightening moment for me involved all the tweets of black families posing in front of marketing for Black Panther (theatre standees and posters, etc). The captions all said variations on essentially the same thing: "Finally!" Point is, representation--accurate representation--in pop cultural shit matters. Especially in a society so steeped in, and influenced by, pop culture. And I'm all for it and I always will be. That said, I still don't think sexuality really figures into or belongs in children's entertainment. And I'll never give a shit about romance among toys, hetero or otherwise. |

I don’t really have a dog in this fight, but I do know that whatever the creative and marketing teams do, they probably don’t want to go the “JK Rowling” route and ex post facto ‘out’ a main character. Probably won’t be received well.

I always thought a good choice for a Joe might be Stretcher. Not that you can reliably tell just by looking, but if I had to guess on a few, he’d be my first choice based on the design aesthetic. Others I’ve heard suggested are Dial Tone, Psyche Out, Bazooka & Alpine, several from Ninja Force, Starduster, Super Joe, and Gung Ho. I’m sure I’m forgetting a few too. On the Cobra side, maybe Major Bludd? And other Dreadnoks like Thrasher (maybe bi?) or Gnawgahyde? If you were going to choose a few, who would you pick? |

The thing with most of what I've read here in regards to the subject is that the suggestions all seem to be characters that would either be represented by a superficial, appearance based stereotype (Raptor, Gung Ho), or any that are close friends (Alpine + Bazooka).
While I still maintain my original position regarding sexuality in a children's franchise, the adult in me knows that to have the subject handled in this manner would be less representative and more parodical. That sort of thing was acceptable in the 80's and 90's, but I think it would just piss a lot of people off nowadays, given the current sociopolitical climate.
