That's kind of a pessimistic view for a line that sold out very fast. And the Vintage collection is also the successor to a line that was dying a slow death at retail until the Black Series came along. So maybe there is hope for Joe too.
Personally, I don't have super high hopes for Retro because it's a Walmart exclusive. That suggests it will have a pretty limited scope / lifespan. Until it spreads to other retailers, I don't think it will have the same impact as Vintage.

Any line that is dependent on doing well in retail stores is going to suffer. That simply isn't the way to sell collector-oriented stuff any more. So I hope Walmart.com was given more weight than retail stores when allocating the stock for Retro. We will see I guess.

If they're still dusting off those molds and just slapping face-printing and retro card art on them in like, say, a year from now? Then I think worry or offense is warranted more than simple disappointment. We still don't know where they plan to push this line, or where it'll eventually be sold, only that right now it's a Walmart exclusive using existing 25th tooling.
At the end of the day, playing it safe and using existing assets as much as possible makes sense when trying to relaunch a line that was a shadow of its former popularity when it was last cancelled. We don't have to like it but it's hard to deny there's a real (financial) reason behind the choices.

I'm somewhere between you guys and the guys on YouTube who have totally destroyed and eviscerated Hasbro over this line (like RetroBlasting and AnalogToys). They make good points, too, even if they come off a bit too cynical. Let's just put it like this: If a fan or collector was involved in any of these decisions, this line would have been at least a bit different. I don't mind too much Hasbro being frugal. But the lack of real effort... or putting some real THOUGHT into it. Don't see an excuse for that. |

But they just don't really strike me as Joe fans based on some things they say or how they say them. Mustache in particular didn't seem to know very much about what he was talking about. Lenny is a little better, but it all seemed very rehearsed. The art guy actually seemed like the biggest fan.

They say on the Fan Friday things that they are all big fans of GI Joe and pushed to get the line back. Someone certainly did some lifting to get a 6" Joe line AND a 3.75" line, no matter what we think of the final result.

100% they could have done better on the part choices (didn't the original release of that SE have both heads? Meaning the commando head was right there on the same tooling and someone decided to not use the one on the card art???) and I won't defend the artistry or lack of on display wrt that.
I gotta get it out of my system since you brought up the channel: Michael from RetroBlasting is a whiny punk bitch. I used to watch them, eventually unsubscribed, but decided to give it another go awhile back when he was repairing a Kenner KITT because I grew up with Knight Rider and there was no possible way he could not make that video a fun ride. He just bitched about people asking him to do the repair, whining about how he didn't understand why those people wouldn't just watch his video on a different toy with the same sound box, and just complains about people wanting to see the very video he's making. It's baffling to watch someone so dedicated to being pissed off by and hating on toys. Really disappointing to see him get so wrapped up in such cartoony crusty old man entitlement the past few years. :/

I dig the Analog Toys guy, though. He just comes across as "no bullshit" and seems more genuine. |
