O-ring figures were what I was hoping for. Yeah, they are toyish, disproportionate and only fed by my nostalgia, but that is what I collect. The modern figures, of which I have a lot, don't really appeal to me much anymore. Most of mine are in boxes as opposed to the o-rings on the shelf in fact. If I see the StormShadow, I will pick that one up as I missed it first time around and did really like that design, otherwise, meh. I'm not mad, or sad, or really anything emotional about how it played out. I'm glad what Hasbro did appeals to most people these days, it just isn't my thing.

Hasbro should save the "Retro" bit for 6 inch figures on 80's cardbacks. So like two years from now.
I don't trust them to do anything new and different with 3.75". No new tooling, no improvements. So I'm just going to take my money over to a 1:18 scale line that knows what it's doing until Hasbro manages to impress me with something. Aftermarket is a bit steep on the good Joe stuff, but I'd rather pay somebody who had good taste when an item was released than a company with no taste at all. The 6" line feels like a Mr. Beast video where he'll buy anything at a sporting goods store but the person has to be wearing it. Maybe we're lucky 3.75" was spared that mess. |

I wonder how many times someone at Hasbro has suggested they re-release Snake Eyes v2 (it must be often), I wonder what the excuse is at this point?

Between this and their (mis)management of the Classified line it's pretty clear that Hasbro did not have enough faith in the success of new G.I. Joe products, so they have half-assed a lot of it, including these "Retro" figures. We can only hope they have learned their lesson from the success (sales) of these new offerings and see that there IS a big Joe collector base out here still. Quote:
All this said, I DO love the release of the H.I.S.S. in this "retro" line, even though I'd have preferred a proper O-Ring Driver figure. The box is fantastic, and I also like that the H.I.S.S. itself looks more like the original than the most recent releases (as far as decals and such). THIS is what a Retro item should be. |

As has been pointed out a million times, the G.I. Joe retro line seems to be almost exactly what the Star Wars Vintage line is: a 3.75" companion line to the 6" line to keep fans of the old scale engaged. The Star Wars Vintage line is why many people guessed G.I. Joe Retro would be modern 3.75" sculpts.
Did they do a lazy job with the first wave's singled carded figures? Yes, they did. They used the wrong Storm Shadow, left out Snake Eyes's V1 head, and used a very old Baroness mold. But I think those figures had something to do with the movie. That laziness isn't as apparently in the HISS and AWE Striker. Scarlett, Roadblock, and Duke are the key figures for this line. Let's see what they do with them before we judge the whole thing just a lazy endeavor.

True. Star Wars has "The Vintage Collection". But Star Wars' RETRO line (also by Hasbro) is made up of very close reproductions of the original vintage figures, which included creating new molds and tooling. They just flat-out didn't do it with JOE. They've also made true Retro figures for G1 Transformers. This is why many naturally expected the same with this "Retro" line, when it's basically just a revamp of their 25th Anniversary stuff. Incidentally, the 25th cardbacks are way more retro than these new ones. It's just hard to understand what Hasbro was going for here, because it seems all over the place. And that's likely because they just didn't put too much thought/effort into it.

Oh, it'll be a lazy endeavor simply because the dollars aren't there to justify more of an investment/effort. If it sells well enough for Walmart to want more and give Hasbro some wholesale cost leverage, it could get better. As it is, it's pretty much what I expected for the limited release rebirth of a line that died a retail death just a few years back.
Personally, I don't have super high hopes for Retro because it's a Walmart exclusive. That suggests it will have a pretty limited scope / lifespan. Until it spreads to other retailers, I don't think it will have the same impact as Vintage.

Then again, maybe this will prompt Hasbro to make TRUE Retro figures (or at least something closer to what they did with 25th if they must stick with updated figures) and make them non-exclusive and/or available through Pulse, etc. |
