Hello guys! Not sure where this belongs, feel free to move the thread if needed. Some of you might know me, I have been selling rare toys from Argentina since year 2001. Yes It´s been a while, I enjoyed the ride :-)
So here is the situation I´d like your opinion on: I usually don´t deal with people that contacts me directly and I dont know who they are, but I am happy to do it when it´s a recommendation from a trustworthy collector and past customer. Some months back I have been contacted by a well known collector to tell me a friend of his was going to write me, that he was searching for some Joes that I could help him with. Cool. Ok so we had our first transaction in March, which went well. For his second purchase the order was quite expensive, so I´ve been anxious that the package arrived well, more even at these crazy times we all are living at. So I was checking tracking status every day, and emailed him frequently with package status when it got closer to his address. At some point the package didnt show any movements for a number of days, it was weird because it was close to his address. So I emailed to ask if he could call them to see if any package is there for pick-up. I am talking about 5 days sitting there still, so naturally I got nervous, it was very strange. He never called them. Finally one day it moves, and when it was "out for delivery" I made sure I emailed him again for heads up. 28-July package marked as "Delivered", I reliefed and asumed it was great news. WRONG. After two days with no news from him, I writed again to check how things went. Guy says "I´m gonna pick it up tomorrow when I go to the office" - Oh, this way I realized it wasnt sent to his home (although the order was important). The following day get I get his email with the word "Nothing". - What do you mean? I replied. guy: "Package is not here". me: "Can you ask to people that works at your building?" (next day) guy: "I asked, nobody knows nothing about a package" Ok so we both call the courier, on my side they said they couldnt get any more info and on his side, he said the courier "opened and investigation" and that they will reach him when they have an update available. This particular situation didn´t happen to me in all these 20 years of selling stuff. Some more info: - In no way I think wrong of the person, guy is legit and was recommended by a trustworthy contact. - To save on tax, I always declare low value (also the shipping price increases significatively if you declare high so nobody wants it). - His office address had something like " #floor-number south" - not a mention to any particular office number nor specific location in that floor, one would asume the "south section" of that floor is a wide area and not a specific area, right?. So my question to you is, what do you think is my part as the seller in case the package happens to NOT appear? Thanks all for the read & opinions! C.M.

Tough situation. Everything was normal until it was marked “delivered”. Packages, especially those coming from international places, sometimes can sit in US Mail Distribution Centers for weeks without any movement. He had it delivered to his office which under normal circumstances it is a safe way to go. The problem is that because of the Covid-19 issues a lot of offices are barely staffed. It is possible that it was misplaced in his office mail department or sitting on someone’s desk that is working remote. Hope it turns out eventually, but he needs to try to help search in his office. My HR Department specifically prohibited receiving personal mail and packages at work as soon as the Covid-19 problem began.

I’ve sold a number of things overseas to most every continent and have had folks wanting to have the package listed low/gift status. For expensive items I have refused to do anything that would keep me from insuring my items for their full value and I’ve stuck with this practice because I feared exactly what you’ve described. I think I would take a deep breath and see what happens with the investigation, perhaps your package will still show up.

Thanks guys for the input!
Collector said that in case it doesn´t pop up he takes the loss. Still I would feel very uncomfortable about that Do you think there is the chance that a dishonest mail employee did some maneuver to make the box appear as delivered in the system and took it? I mean just to steal some toys he probably doesn´t know about... had to be a very strong case of nostalgia go figure!

This has happened to me several times, and the package always arrives after a few days.
I recently had one of my Joes from Hasbro marked “delivered” but the package never appeared. After a week it finally arrived, and it turned out the label had been damaged. It took them several days to work through the system and fix the problem. I’ve had other times where the package was delivered to a neighbor by accident, and a few times when it has been marked “delivered” but showed up 48 hours later. But I’ve never had one that never appeared. Anyway, this is a matter between the customer and the courier. He needs to talk directly to the post office (or UPS or Fedex or whatever). |

Yup, "last mile". Whether it's mail or utilities, that's where the bulk of the infrastructure costs end up going and every company is keen to move that over to other providers as much as is practical.
