The Infantry Division or Infantry Troopers (a.k.a. “Green Shirts”) were Army soldiers assigned in support of the G.I. Joe team (communications, intelligence, infantry, marksman, heavy weapons, and vehicle specialists) and were sold in the 2005 Toys ‘R Us exclusive Infantry Division set. In 2008 some G.I. Joe Troopers were released as Infantry Troopers with the Toys ‘R Us exclusive Firefly vs. G.I. Joe Troopers pack. “G.I. Joe infantry troopers are a top-notch part of the G.I. Joe team. They're the backbone of any mission, slamming COBRA forces with solid muscle and overwhelming firepower. To be part of this infantry force, each trooper studies how COBRA fights so he can anticipate and counteract the enemy's moves. Providing essential ground and air support, G.I. Joe infantry troopers help ensure a mission's success with their superior skill and ferocious determination to win.” An Army soldier assigned to the G.I. Joe team could try out for the Steel Brigade if they wanted to, but that is unnecessary because they are already on the G.I. Joe team. Most of them just haven’t made a name for themselves yet. It is also interesting to note that more than 20 yrs. after the establishment of the Steel Brigade, there was added mention that civilians can also make it into the ranks of the Steel Brigade. I personally find that interesting, and would attribute it to the real world establishment of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which did not exist until the end of 2002, thus the change within the Steel Brigade rank and file.

Sorry. I should have explained that was stated playfully, in a joking manner.
Yes, the front page for this HissTank forum website has done a great job in keeping us informed on the Valaverse toy company's sales offerings... just recently I remember reading that they would be taking money for a Sgt. Slaughter character. He's probably not the same "Sarge" character as the G.I. Joe character, but at least he looks like Robert Remus and uses the same wrestling name. The unproduced Steel Brigade figures offered by Valaverse have little in common with the G.I. Joe Steel Brigade subteam, other than the toy designer collects G.I. Joe figures (as do we all).

I never knew about the Steel Brigade as a kid (don't know if we even had them over here?), so i was curious what they were, when i got back into collecting. Never really read much about them though.
Thanks for all the detailed info. I really like the idea of the Joes having a reserve fighting force. I felt the same way about the Estrela toy company of São Paulo, Brazil and the Venezuelan toy company, Rubiplas. Even the British toy company, Palitoy, had produced action figures which I was unaware of during my youth, and would know nothing about until I began expanding my G.I. Joe collecting as an adult.

Steel Brigade was available in the UK as Special Corps with ads to mail away for the figure appearing in Transformers and GI Joe comic, which was the result of Transformers getting the reprints of US GI Joe comics shoved in the back after Marvel UK cancelled Action Force weekly and launched the UK originated stories into Action Force Monthly - sold in the US as GI Joe: European Missions - in 1988 before the line changed from Action Force to GI Joe the Action Force in 1990 and the simply GI Joe in 1991.

Thanks. I did not know about that 1988 Action Force insert, until you told me about it. Because the insert never mentioned the word “Steel Brigade”, it makes me wonder if that action figure was often just thought of as a nameless character in the U.K., or if everyone just called it something else because it was one of the items received after joining the "Special Corps" - the Action Force fan club. Did customers still receive a custom designed printed character “dossier” like those with the Steel Brigade figures in the United States, or did the "Special Corps" club members only receive the action figure itself, with no other supporting documents or information?

Hey, remember when we were kids and didn't give half a shit about "canon"? It wasn't even really a thought, and if it was, we maybe called it something like "official." There was generally one kid who was a stickler for such stuff, and no one really liked playing with that kid.

It's inevitable.

Anyway, the talk of "canon" made me reflect on the differences between how we viewed this stuff as children and we look at it now. Carry on... |

SPECIAL CORPS Alls I know is, like I said, they periodically printed the form in Transformers and I filled out several intending to send off for it, but couldn't get my mum to agree to get the postal order I needed to send off for it. Squinting at the pictures on BFTB of the other side of that insert it looks like it says you got a 'command file', which I guess is something like the one the American one came with. .... Right...I just dug through my box of Transformers comics and found one with the ad on the back. You got: the figure and accessories, "your OWN Action Force combat command file", a personal welcome letter from Hawk, Your Action Force Special Corps membership card, a giant AF poster that features YOU along with all the other AF and Cobra members (uses the filecard art), a top secret flexi-disc message from Hawk with a great monthly competition, for Special Corps members ONLY, a Special Corps badge to show others that you are one of the Elite. (presumably that's the patch.) |
