I do not know if this topic has been talked about before but I really looked for some information and did not find anything but information about the figures themselves but not the characters they represent.
I mean, is there any canonical appearance of the Steel Brigade as a person or as a troop of G.I. Joe or it is only a "custom" "imaginary" character that was intended to represent the kid that owned the figure as an avatar in his playing world? Is the figure an actual member of G.I Joe? Are there any media appearances to support its or their existence in the Joeverse? |

Are there any media appearances to support its or their existence in the Joeverse? From the years 1987 through 1994, the Steel Brigade mail-in offer from Hasbro Direct allowed consumers to create their own unique character by selecting from options on the questionnaire, which created numerous possible outcomes and proficiencies for their character. The final year recolored the action figure in bright Battle Corps colors, which many G.I. Joe fans would later attribute to a leadership position because of his gold command helmet, and he would later become known as the Steel Brigade Commander. Master Collector/Fun Publications/the G.I. Joe Collectors Club employed the talents of a couple former Hasbro helpers (also of the former Steel Brigade Club), and they introduced the Steel Brigade into the 2005 G.I. Joe Convention products and theme. In 2006 Hasbro released an action figure set called the Plague Troopers vs Steel Brigade, which included three Steel Brigade members (Checkpoint, Red Zone, and Rook) who had specialties like other G.I. Joe team members, such as interrogator, security, and urban assault. Hasbro began releasing more Steel Brigade retail products and file card descriptions in 2011, and the G.I. Joe Collectors Club would revisit the Steel Brigade team again in 2014 with their convention set theme. Some of the information learned about the Steel Brigade includes: “Steel Brigade Troopers are the backbone of the G.I. Joe fighting force. The "grunts" of the team. They are chosen for their exceptional dedication and skills. They work hard to hone their skills so that they can move up the ranks into specialized positions. They meet every challenge with determination and enthusiasm, and eagerly go on missions where they can watch and learn from their superiors.” “In times of extreme need, the G.I. Joe team activates the reserve members to strengthen front line forces. These Steel Brigade troopers have trained with the G.I. Joe Reserve Unit but have not been given a code name for active duty…” “The Steel Brigade are members of the G.I. Joe team's international Security Force. They can quickly provide regional stability to "hot spots" throughout the world without drawing the attention that the visible presence of the regular G.I. Joe team would. Each combat team functions as a reconnaissance, intelligence, surveillance, and target acquisition squadron. The entire sub team is comprised of highly trained individuals, both military and civilian, some of whom distinguish themselves sufficiently to later be chosen to join the G.I. Joe team full time.” In addition to paratroopers, the Steel Brigade used their own Steel Brigade Skyhawk aircraft in 2005 and 2014. “The Steel Brigade Delta team members are mobile battle experts specializing in vehicular combat.” “Steel Brigade Delta troopers (Security Force Pilots) are the backbone of the G.I. Joe security forces. They are chosen for their exceptional dedication and skills. Each member works hard to hone their skills so that they can move up the ranks into specialized positions. They meet every challenge with determination and enthusiasm, and eagerly go on missions where they can watch and learn from their superiors. The Delta units are mobile battle experts specializing in either aerial or vehicular combat operations.” “The pilots rated to fly V.T.O.L. (vertical take-off and landing) aircraft are chosen for their ability to make quick decisions on a great deal of data. They need to constantly adjust their thrust based on an unbalanced center of gravity, unpredictable winds, and the vehicle's weight changing as fuel is consumed. Then they must dodge incoming attacks, and retaliate with onboard guns or guided weapons. Add to that non-stop radio chatter, and it becomes obvious why they call these aircraft ‘flying coffins’!” They also had a Steel Brigade Commander (a Security Force Leader) who served as “the section chief for the Eastern region security forces of the G.I. Joe team. His primary duty is to provide highly trained and capable security personnel with the abilities to fight the enemy on the land, the sea, and in the air. His tactics include defensive combat operations, as well as aggressive reconnaissance to gain all possible information about the enemy. Once the threat is determined, he can allocate the resources from an integrated military structure and use both the Steel Brigade and Steel Brigade Delta units to safeguard his region.” “The Steel Brigade Commander deploys his troops wherever they're needed to support the G.I. Joe team. His gold command helmet contains the latest in microcomputer technology, including GPS tracking and radio communication links to each Steel Brigade team member.” Fun Publications would use the Steel Brigade with advertising, newspapers, comics, and magazines, such as the 2014 G.I. Joe vs. Cobra comic #7, and the July 2016 G.I. Joe Collector’s Club magazine which are two examples of some comic appearances referenced below…

depends on what continuity you're referring to. ARAH comics, ARAH cartoon or any of the follow on or rebooted comics since.

Thank you for the detailed information Playful!
And now Steel Brigade is part of the Valaverse https://news.hisstank.com/2019/06/19...revealed-66611 G.I. Joe: War On Cobra has the Steel Battalion. They don't look like Steel Brigade but I think if Hasbro still had the trademark, they would have been the Steel Brigade. |

In the real world, the 113th Sustainment Brigade of the North Carolina Army National Guard located at Greensboro, North Carolina is actual Steel Brigade which has served in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and the Multinational Force and Observers (but neither the G.I. Joe Steel Brigade nor the Valaverse unproduced Steel Brigade action figures have anything to do with these real world soldiers). https://www.dvidshub.net/image/62717...igade-soldiers

I forgot about the Valaverse toy company… didn’t they go out of business yet? (I can’t remember anyone ever displaying those toys… probably are still unproduced.) Yes, the Valaverse mentioned a small squad who adopted the name Steel Brigade, but that had nothing to do with G.I. Joe’s Steel Brigade and don’t even share the same world setting or time period.

Yes, the front page for this HissTank forum website has done a great job in keeping us informed on the Valaverse toy company's sales offerings... just recently I remember reading that they would be taking money for a Sgt. Slaughter character. He's probably not the same "Sarge" character as the G.I. Joe character, but at least he looks like Robert Remus and uses the same wrestling name. The unproduced Steel Brigade figures offered by Valaverse have little in common with the G.I. Joe Steel Brigade subteam, other than the toy designer collects G.I. Joe figures (as do we all).

I never knew about the Steel Brigade as a kid (don't know if we even had them over here?), so i was curious what they were, when i got back into collecting. Never really read much about them though.
Thanks for all the detailed info. I really like the idea of the Joes having a reserve fighting force. |
