I'm creating a fan website about Zarana & Zandar. I have no idea what I'm doing. Does anyone here have any experience with web design and possibly WordPress?

Well, I'm no expert, and I hate to sound like a Youtuber plugging a sponsor, but I hear Squarespace is a user friendly start. However you proceed, link it, I'd love to see it.

I've been working in Photoshop and Dreamweaver for about a year, learning to make websites and edit photos, but I still have much more to learn. But, I recommend you create the basic framework of the site with the header and the footer and then use WordPress's built-in features to add text entries, photo galleries, etc. Also, if you have a bigger budget, you can hire the guys from https://www.webcitz.com/website-design/redesign.html to deal with all your website problems. They will make the site in one day.

Welcome to the Tank!

I'd still like to do a website of my favourite characters--though I still don't know where to begin or where to go.

What do you think about taking web design courses? Your request looks like you have decided to create a website yourself. If you don't want to pay others for the work, you'll have to learn how to do it yourself. Of course, I think it'd be much easier and more effective to pay a web design agency, but if you have a lot of free time, take a look at video tutorials on YouTube. Because it's not enough to just create a site, you'll have to work on its content. Usually, there are three different specialists involved in this process, and you'll have to take on all these roles.

Either pay somebody to do or for you or do research it via the internet or YouTube.

I'm going to start off with the assumption that your real intent is to talk about the Zs and not learn Web development.

The first important step is defining exactly what you want this site to do. A "site" can be many things: an app that does stuff, long form storytelling, daily journal, collection of links/references, or a forum like this.

Only when you have that figured out can you get any kind of good advice.

It's natural to think that you need a site (and build it yourself), but just about everyone I've spoken to over the years really just needed a Facebook or Tumblr page.

Otherwise, it can get pretty overwhelming pretty quickly the more you own of the process. So, my advice (I've been professionally building apps/sites for ~20 years) is to see if something like Wix will work for you. It looks like it's free, so I would say sign up, pick a template, and then just start creating.

Down the road, if you find something that's a better fit, you outgrow the limitations, or you think it's time to learn how the sausage is made, then you move your content over. Some things are easier to transfer than others, but it's not impossible. If your goal is to put content out onto the internet, offload as much as possible as cheap as possible and don't get bogged down with all the details that go into supporting a site.

EDIT: Also just realized this was an old thread and it looks like it got necromanced a couple of times by spammers. Good news, DT, putting stuff on the internet is easier now than it was two years ago.

I see this thread got resurrected after a few months but if you are still interested in doing this and don't normally do web development or other types of programming, you might want to look into some no-code options like Webflow or Squarespace.

https://www.squarespace.com/

I've heard good things about Webflow. We actually had a former client migrate their site to Webflow recently and we were surprised it could handle some of the more custom-ish functionality their site had.

How much does it cost to hire someone to design a website?

It can be as little as 100 bucks to as much as 30,000. Like any other specialty profession, the cost will depend on the person you employ as well as the size and intricacy of the website you want them to design.
