I'm creating a fan website about Zarana & Zandar. I have no idea what I'm doing. Does anyone here have any experience with web design and possibly WordPress?

Well, I'm no expert, and I hate to sound like a Youtuber plugging a sponsor, but I hear Squarespace is a user friendly start. However you proceed, link it, I'd love to see it.

Welcome to the Tank!
I'd still like to do a website of my favourite characters--though I still don't know where to begin or where to go.

Either pay somebody to do or for you or do research it via the internet or YouTube.

I'm going to start off with the assumption that your real intent is to talk about the Zs and not learn Web development.
The first important step is defining exactly what you want this site to do. A "site" can be many things: an app that does stuff, long form storytelling, daily journal, collection of links/references, or a forum like this. Only when you have that figured out can you get any kind of good advice. It's natural to think that you need a site (and build it yourself), but just about everyone I've spoken to over the years really just needed a Facebook or Tumblr page. Otherwise, it can get pretty overwhelming pretty quickly the more you own of the process. So, my advice (I've been professionally building apps/sites for ~20 years) is to see if something like Wix will work for you. It looks like it's free, so I would say sign up, pick a template, and then just start creating. Down the road, if you find something that's a better fit, you outgrow the limitations, or you think it's time to learn how the sausage is made, then you move your content over. Some things are easier to transfer than others, but it's not impossible. If your goal is to put content out onto the internet, offload as much as possible as cheap as possible and don't get bogged down with all the details that go into supporting a site. EDIT: Also just realized this was an old thread and it looks like it got necromanced a couple of times by spammers. Good news, DT, putting stuff on the internet is easier now than it was two years ago. Last edited by n3rf; 12-02-2022 at 02:25 PM.. |

https://webflow.com/ https://www.squarespace.com/ I've heard good things about Webflow. We actually had a former client migrate their site to Webflow recently and we were surprised it could handle some of the more custom-ish functionality their site had.

How much does it cost to hire someone to design a website?

It can be as little as 100 bucks to as much as 30,000. Like any other specialty profession, the cost will depend on the person you employ as well as the size and intricacy of the website you want them to design.

If you don't, look at something like Wix or Squarespace, a lot of YouTubers pitch those brands and you can get a discount, and you should be able to google up even better discounts as well. Wordpress has a LOT of security holes. I DO NOT recommend it. The first 2 years of my career were spent fighting hackers trying to break our Wordpress-based eCommerce sites. Even if you don't go with the paid options above, I recommend getting anything free other than Wordpress, its security flaws are legendary. I'm sure you don't want a repeat of what happened on Wikipedia (except with bots selling Viagra.) I don't want to get into why Wordpress is insecure, but a lot of it has to do with 3rd party plugins for Wordpress written either by amateurs, or people who just abandon the plugins and go on to something else. If you go with Wix or Squarespace, and play around with the templates, I promise you won't need a web designer to make something that looks nice. If you can edit Wikipedia pages, you can handle Wix or Squarespace. Last edited by BizCopperhead; 12-07-2022 at 01:19 AM.. |
