The Crimson Guard is a "Cobra Elite Trooper" per package description.

Snow Serpents, Para-Vipers and Lampreys are the most elite "common" troop.
After that, all named Cobras would be pretty elite.

Crimson Guard aren't necessarily elite troops- just very good. Their specialty is infiltration, and their training is more financial and legal. CGs are rarely used in combat because of this. Tomax and Xamot were elite but not from Cobra but their time as mercenaries and their training before that.
The Shadow Crimson Guard isn't so much elite thanks to training as they are elite thanks to the power they wield. Think of them as similar to the Gestapo or Russian Political Officers.

Crimson Guard are extremely elite, but they're not really what I meant. They're more leadership and behind the scenes than the actual troops you send when you need a job done.
Snow Serpents and Lamprey's seem to be the most common answer here. |

Snow Serpents/Para Vipers I think would be the top tier generalists, but I think that divisions such as the Alley Vipers are also elite in their Field. I think it all depends on what you personally see as a lateral advance or a step up as far as rank, ability, and specialty are concerned.
I would say that to be a Motor Viper it would be a lateral movement, but for example, Alley Viper or Strato Viper Ranks would only take the best of the best, hence making them 'elite' as well. |

What gets confusing - as has been noted - is how when a new group of Vipers are named, they are automatically considered the best of the best. There is actually a Joe comic that makes reference to how each of the pilot groups argue that they are the best, as each group was medically enhanced for either reflexes, withstand g-forces, etc.
I think that eels were suppose to be an entry point to Cobra special forces, which is strange but if you look at the 80s, Navy SEALS were thought to be the best of the special forces units by the media and public (thanks to a bad Charlie Sheen movie). This may have influenced them to be the source of all the other elite units. I just have a hard time imagining an elite unit that is so specialized as a snow trooper! How many battles do you plan to fight in the snow?

Cobra isn't an army, it's a terrorist organization. So you just tell all your troops they are the best and highest paid. Keeps them all in line, even if the reality is they get beat down by the joes every time.

I wondered this question a while back. I think you're all right.
They aren't an official army so tell'em they're bad and build up their confidence. I think they all have specialties. The snow serpents, eels and paravipers are all the same thing according to the file cards. They just belong in different divisions and A.O.'s. If you have a job you call in these vipers or those vipers. I wonder about Log-Vipers. The Log-istics Viper is the baddest of the bad in the Cobra Secretarial pool. They handle resupply, mission planning and paper work. The weapons include Bullet firing ballpoint pens, staplers and rubber band and paperclips. Also proficient in using thumbtacks and pushpins with deadly accuracy and razor sharp 3x5 index cards and letter openers. Sorry long day at work. |

This might be the best explanation I've read so far. That said, Snow Serpents are probably the most elite and have the most extensive training. Whether that compares to Joe training is another thing. |
