I have seen the odd birthday mentioned in a filecard or profile somewhere, though can't for the life of me remember where I saw them now that I actually want to look them up.
So I put it to the good people of this forum. Do you know of any birthdays for individual characters, and what are your thoughts on their relative ages to each other? |

At the time of ARAH, Duke is one of the oldest Joes as he was serving in the Green Berets in the early 1960s. Dude should've retired by the end of that comic. Repeater is also stated to be an older guy. Probably somewhere in his early 40s. Most of the Joes have to be at least 30 to have got some experience, ranked up and so on. Others who had other careers before the military have to be at least 35, I'd say, like Cover Girl, Spearhead, Quick Kick and one of the vehicle drivers who was a IRS guy.

Not necessarily Cover Girl. She was likely a "high fashion model" in her mid-to-late teens, and burned out/washed up by 20 (if not before). Models typically have a very short shelf life. Relics (a la Gisele Bündchen) who remain "relevant" at an "advanced age" are really rather rare.

Well ages are generally based on the following:
Assuming you're 18 when you join the military, and the average time it takes to be promoted: •Private (E-2) - 18 (join + 6 months) •Private First Class (E-3) - 19 - (join + 1 year) •Specialist/Corporal (E-4) - 20 (join + 18 months) •Sergeant (E-5) - 22 (join + 4.2 years) •Staff Sergeant (E-6) - 27 (join + 8.5 years) •Sergeant First Class (E-7) - 32 (join + 13.6 years) •Master Sergeant/First Sergeant (E-8) - 35 - (join + 17 years) •Sergeant Major (E-9) - 39 - (join + 20.8 years) As an aside, Duke and Scarlett would be roughly the following ages because of their filecard ranks. I know Scarlett was a LT in some comics but I'm going strictly off the filecard. Scarlett is an Enlisted-5 (E-5). Average age is 22-27 years old. I think we could assume she was 22 because she is a blue-flamer. E-5 is a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO), Sergeant. Duke is an Enlisted-8 (E-8). Average age is 35-39 years old. E-8 is a senior NCO (SNCO), Master/First Sergeant. This is very high in the NCO ranks. Only E-9 is higher. Fraternization is illegal/criminal and violates the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), Article 134. They cannot legally date, especially if in the same unit/Command. Same for officers dating enlisted members. Against good order and discipline. |

Or if you're talking officer, start at say age 23, (graduated college at 21), and then add:
•O-2 (Lt): 25 (join + 18 months) •O-3 (Capt): 27 (join + 4 years) •O-4 (Major): 33 (join + 10 years) •O-5 (Lt.Col): 39 (join + 16 years) •O-6 (Col): 45 (join + 22 years) Anything at or above O-7 is competitive, so there's no average age/time available. The mandatory retirement age for all general officers is 62 (this can be deferred to age 64 in some cases, or indefinitely in the case of G.I. Joe). Under the law (10 USC, Sec 635), an officer who has been promoted to O-7, but is not on the recommended list to O-8, must retire five years after promotion to O-7, or 30 years of active duty service, whichever is later. An O-8 must retire five years after being promoted to O-8, or 35 years of service, whichever is greater (10 USC, Sec 636). The Secretary of the Service Concerned (ie, Secretary of the Army, Secretary of the Navy, Secretary of the Air Force) or the President of the United States, can defer the above mandatory retirements, up until the time that the officer reaches the age of 62 (10 USC, Sec 637). |
