Fun fact: I’m at Fort Campbell, home of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) which has proudly worn in battle the world famous Cobra emblem created by Ron Rudat.
The first time I am aware of it was in 1991 during Operation Desert Storm. They fired the first shots, taking out Iraqi radar sites. After a series of victories, they established Forward Operation Bases (FOBs) Viper and Cobra. Even recently in the past couple years, in support of the Global War on Terror, U.S. Soldiers assigned to Viper Company, 1-26 Infantry, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) patrolled in East Africa. The children who played with Vipers and Cobra in the 1980’s went on to fight for this country wearing those symbols in the decades which followed. And now you know… Yo Joe! Side note: If you haven’t already seen the patch on the uniform (as displayed in our base museum), maybe I’ll take a picture and post it on this forum some time, if anyone is interested. I think it’s been on HissTank already, but I can no longer remember where.

Well, not exactly soldiers, but I know what you mean. The Punisher logo was used in Iraq by the Navy's SEAL Team 3. In his autobiography, United States Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle wrote “We spray-painted it on our Hummers and body armor, and our helmets and all our guns. We spray-painted it on every building or wall we could, We wanted people to know, We’re here and we want to f**k with you.” Others started copying the Punishers without permission, and today the Iraqi Army is still using the emblem as an interesting skull decoration, having no idea what it even means.
Okay, here is just one example of the Cobra emblem being used by our Army soldiers, in this case on Cobra Company, 1-502nd Infantry Regiment "First Strike", 2nd Brigade Combat Team. Hooah! |
