As a U.S. citizen, you really have no excuse for not knowing that we already have such a budget and agency, called the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Officer Corps. It’s one of the eight federal uniformed services of the United States, and is a scientific agency overseen by the Department of Commerce, not the Department of Defense. At least CapBritain’s ignorance of this matter is excusable because he is across the pond.

Thank you for visiting the United States of America, comrade. I hope you can stay a while and enjoy your visit. Seriously, I'm a bit of a Trekkie myself, and am surprised that people didn't know that Gene Roddenberry based the flag of the United Federation of Planets off of the United Nations flag, and the emblem of the Star Fleet delta insignia was a slightly modified symbol already used by the USAF space commands in the 1960s. Now some people are actually young enough (read foolish enough) to believe that the DoD has ripped off Star Trek. What a hoot!

Regardless of your nationality or immigration status, (unless you are an Aussie Bloke) We should all be wanting to get some Space Force Joes and Cobras. Would love to get a G.I. Joe space shuttle. May be a little tribute to the US Shuttle program.

Serious note tho. Also where do y’all think the next aerial combat is going to be? Correct, behind the atmosphere. The US is actually behind bec other countries are already moving on this and it would suck to be last place.

Has someone shared this already? It looks like Star Trek is becoming a real thing.

Today is the presentation of the official flag for the U.S. Space Force. Since the last time something like this happened was 72 years ago, when the USAF flag was presented, it’s an inspirational moment in military history, and just in time for Armed Forces Day tomorrow.

Now some people are actually young enough (read foolish enough) to believe that the DoD has ripped off Star Trek. What a hoot! Here's an article talking about some of this, with some photos of logos (though only as far back as 1982). I'd be curious to see the pre-Star Trek USAF space operations logos that would have inspired Star Trek. |

Commercial space is on the verge of really revolutionary change and I believe space is going to be our next huge economic growth opportunity (along the lines of dotcom). And actually, there's an interesting convergence between oceans and space. The best candidates for finding life in our Solar system are on ocean moons. With an eye to better understanding those environments and figuring out how to explore them, there's a lot of interest among planetary scientists for anything we can do in Earth oceanic science. And really, the idea of Earth versus space is a false dichotomy that's too often propagated. As the only planet we readily have access to (baby steps on others so far), Earth sciences are fundamental to better understanding planetary science. Conversely, with a sample size of only one, we're limited in how much we can understand the Earth, and so anything we can do in space with planetary science broadens our sample size and benefits our understanding of Earth. |
